I have a 17 year old New Forest mare, who has been suffering reoccurring mastitis for the last 11 years since her first foal. There is no pattern to it and can occur any time throughout the year.
I would like to hear from anyone who may of experienced similar problems or have any possible remedies.

My appaloosa mare has the same thing. I have owned her for 17 years and she is 28 now. I think she may of had a foal before I bought her, but she seems to suffer from it every now and then.

I think epsom salts can help this, was so many years ago when our mare used to get it,its hard to remember, but ask your vet about epsom salts, might be worth a try to relieve symptoms

Thanks for your reply. My mare Alice can average 2 -3 attacks a year, I keep threatening to take out shares in the antiobiotic company!! The first time she had it I nearly lost her because I wasn't expecting it, and she ended up 5 days in the veterinary hospital but now its daily checks for first signs. At least now I can manage it myself, and she is so good about it all.
