mastitis?

I'm weaning my seven month mini Shetland from her mum. The foal is very plump but over the past few weeks I've noticed that the mum, beneath her hairy mammoth coat, is losing weight. I've stabled the mare and she seems quite happy and is eating well...but I've noticed her teats are rather swollen. They aren't hard and she doesn't seem to mind when I touch them. Should I be worried about mastitis and is there anything I can do to prevent it?

If their not rock hard then it wouldn't be mastitus. I think there is nothing you can do to prevent it (otherwise I would like to know as mare just had it). Is the foal on the mare at present. I was advised at weaning to get the mare out to the field (they were in separate stables) and away from the foal to help her dry off.
