hi, One of my mares has mastitis that we have been treating for nearly 4 weeks now. I am so worried about her as from what I have googled it is treated with antibiotics and it clears up.

Some history: 2 years ago mare was continually in season, she was scanned and put on regumate. All was well. She is now 14 and I don't really do anything with her so decided last November to bring her off the regumate to see if the seasons would regulate - they didn't and beginning of this year vet advised to put her back on regumate. Unfortunately my other mare got kicked in the paddock and was on box rest and required quite a bit of my attention each day which meant I took my eye off the other one. One weekend just before riding her I checked her undercarriage to be shocked to find one massive swollen teat. Called vet who thought perhaps starting and stopping the regumate could have created a false pregnancy and so prescribed antibiotics.

The teat reduced in size but not completely and was baggy not hard and so we tried a second course of antibiotics. Powder antibiotics syringed into her mouth. Still didn't work so vet came out and now mare is on penecillan injections for 5 days. Tomorrow is the last day and this morning it looks worse than ever! in fact there is swelling along the belly in front the teat. I am so worried about her.

Anyone had anything similar? She also has a small lump on the vein on inside leg which vet said looks like a cyst. Her next course of action is to rescan inside to see if anything else going on. I cant seem to find much on google that is similar in that it turned out to be something else or took this long to rectify so wondered if anyone on here could add anything?

Hi, my mare had mastitis a few years ago, had been on regumate but had her marbled, the mastitis was in late summer so pretty sure it was just flies that caused it. Quite a poorly girl! Course of anti bs, stripped out a couple of times a day, wasn't long before she was back to her old self. 4 weeks I would want further investigation. Is she running milk? Any discharge? When my mare was close to foaling she had swelling in front of her bag but this is a normal sign for an in foal mare.

Thank you for your reply Tilly. She is not running milk and there is no discharge or crustiness. Just the swelling. I am wondering if its the Regumate making it worse. Today was last penicillin injection and she is worse than when the course started. Have left message for my vet to call me.
