Mastits?? In foal mare.

My friend has a TB mare who is due to go to stud on Saturday to have her baby. She is due at the end of February.

He is new to breeding but does have some basic knowledge hence the fact the mare is off to stud to have her baby.

He said she bagged up at the beginning of the week no fluid coming from them though.

But having checked her today her teats are hard and swollen and sore, he is worrying about mastitis.

What are the symtoms of mastitis or does this just sound normal??

My OH's mare had mastitis the other week - vwet said he'd seen a few recently - she is not in foal but has bred approx 8 years ago.

Her bag was swollen and hot - around twice normal size and uncomfortable. She had 10 days of Norodine (not sure if this is ok with in foal mare) and has been fine since - swelling of teats/bag started going down after 24hrs

Sounds quite normal if she is due in about 4 weeks.
Will need to get quite swollen and turn shiny before foaling. I tend to observe and not fiddle to much to prevent passing on infections. as long as it is not overly more swollen than the otherside and the mare is quite happy in her self then enjoy watching the changes.
In a couple of week if she is stabled at night in the morning you may see waxy droplets on the ends.
Dont recommend it for novices but can draw a spot of fluid off 3 days inteval to start with into clear pot. if cloudy watery looking weeks away from foaling , cloudier to milky days away. thick milky foaling iminant. - no sleep tonight!!

my mare foaled last year - her first foal. I thought that her bag was just ready for feeding her foal but unfortunately it was mastitis - very hard, swollen and hot. She refused to let the foal feed at first (couple of hours) till she had treatment. She had her bag massaged (the side that had got mastitis) two-three times a day, warm compresses put on it. We tried to milk it but nothing came out. with movement it helped ease it and did totally clear
Ebi had around 5 courses of anitibitoics before it totally cleared and she is now left with a blind teet and only 1 bag that produces milk. Luckily this has been more than sufficient to feed her foal.

If hes in doubt then I would get the vet to see her. Better safe than sorry.

In that case I wouldn't worry too much just yet, though it might be an idea to tlak to her vet - he will know her afterall!
