I have bread mine once and every time they got locked they turned away. I had to hold ours together because if any of them try to pull away to soon it can damage the male bits and pieces. Some can stay tied for 5 mins or some up to an hour. The get a bit tired with when they are tied, but not as stressful as they say IMO.

Hi, any tips on mating??? When they tie, do they always turn away from each other? Is it really as stressful as they say?

If its the first time make sure you're there to hold them because they may try to run from the pain - not good! They will scream at first and then settle down for the 10 or 20 mins or so, have a stop watch so you know know how long they tie for. When they break make sure the bitch doesn't pee straight away or start dribbling semen if she does, get her to do a hand stand for 10 mins.
Will the dog be kennelled with the bitch? If so after the first time they'll probably do things themselves. Just keep an eye on them.
Unless she knows the dog well it might be wise to have a muzzle aswell, I know Skye turned quite nasty at first and if the dog gets bitten doing the job it can really knock his confidence.
Thanks for the replies, very helpful. They do know each other and get on very well. I actually own the dog. The plan is to take them to my field, where they have met loads before, let them have a run first if they need to (she's quite hyper) and see what they do. I know they can change when in season but she has never been nasty before, and my boy is as daft as a brush but def knows what it's all about. I looked after my brothers ex's dog last weekend who is due in the end of the month and mine kept trying to have a go, he alwasy knows before anyone if a bitch is due in! We can always put them in the stable so there less chance of pulling. Plus there will be three of us there the whole time. The bitch showed first signs of seaon last saturday so we are going to try this saurday then maybe every couple of days for maybe 3-4 times? Does that sound ok?
Might be a bit early, it's usually from day 11 of the season - though it depends on the bitch. There is then usually a 4-5 day period that the bitch is able to be mated. When we've had bitches mated we go up for the first one, leave a day then have a second one. I do know people who own both the dogs who have just let them get on with it but I don't think that's fair.
Maybe we should leave it a little then, i was told from about the 9th, satruday would be the 8th if that def was her first day. But there is a chance she was a bit earlier than that, this is the first year she has had 2 seasons it was always only in March previously.
We aren't going to just leave them to it, there will be 3 of us, and i am sure the will need to be held a little as she is a bit of a loon when she's excited!
Start on the 10th-12th day and mate 48 hours after, shouldn't need to mate more than 3 times if they have successful ties. If your dog is anything like Nero he'll tell you when shes 'red hot'. The blood will stop and it will run clear, more mucus like.
If you don't have 'The book of the bitch' its a good book to read.
We were given a good tip, each morning before you let the bitch out for the first wee of the day, dab her fanny with a bit of tissue, when you get a light straw colour she is at her optimum time for mating. We did this, and each time she waited another two days before she REALLY fancied him! She was 13 days each time, when she mated.
