hi! we are trying to breed from our terrier but he can't seem to find the hole?? she's only slightly shorter than him but he always aims too high. just need some advice on how to get him in the right direction!

Wear a pair of gloves and guide him in.

Or take this as a sign and let them go without this time

we tried holding her and guiding his body as he tends to climb too high on to her back. but he gets shy when were too close and stops trying. as soon as they are free he mounts her again.

Are they both maidens? If so it is never a good combination. You could try lifting her back end slightly with a telephone directory or similar, but just be careful she doesn't slip when they tie.

Okay, I'm usually not the one who writes the most negative replies about dogs and breeding on HHO but I do believe in some natural selection, if the stud dog to be, needs help with his aim, you either leave him to figure it out by himself or you accept that he wasn't meant to be a stud dog.

If you're worrying about him getting it right, he will sense that you're worried about something and that might affect his "performance", so relax, most bitches doesn't need to be mated on exactly the best time in their season, their eggs can wait a few days for the sperm to come for a visit and dog sperm can also live inside the bitch for up to 5 or 6 days, as I recall it.

If he is young and inexperienced, let him try again tomorrow. If he still can't aim properly, tell the bitch owner they need to take her to their second/reserve choice of stud dogs.

it is his first try, she's coming for another romantic date later in the week so fingers crossed he'll figure it out!!

If he doesn't, you might have to consider AI, though obviously it would be too late this time and you'd have to wait for her next season.

A friend who's a golden retriever breeder says that she uses AI a lot as some of her dogs just don't get it.

It can be a bit hit and miss. Just try again a day or two later. Let them play. Mine took several misses before he hit and he only tied for about a minute, but produced six beautiful puppies. If he is shy just let him get on with it. Helping will hinder him and could put him off totally.
