Murphy and I have been feeling more than ready for a new challenge :) Intermediate is out of bounds for the time being whilst I continue to try and get dear Billykins qualified for the grassroots next year so I entered the Intermediate Novice at Hambleden to see how we would get on with the step up in the dressage and show jumping.

The dressage used the CIC* B test which I rode (very badly :o) at Rockingham a few weeks previously so I was determined to iron out the rider errors which were littered through Murphy's pretty smart test! Murphy's trot has been getting bigger and bigger as I have started to ride much more bravely. He can get quite onward board and strong in the hand which used to make me want to fight him and bottle him up. I'm not really sure when the lightbulb moment happened but I now encourage him to flow on instead of fighting him and the results are pretty impressive! He feels incredible to sit on and I am now finding myself really enjoying riding my tests, and I feel like I am showing off the most super horse! Unfortunately the walk has never been good, and I'm not quite there with the canterwork. We had a couple of big blips in the test including an incorrect canter strike off with a bit of a scramble to sort legs out, but on the whole I was pleased. Sadly no video or pics as I was on my own :(

One of the downsides of doing an IN is the seriously long wait for the Show Jumping if you are early in the section. I had a wait of 6 hours but as I am only 40 mins from Mattingley I decided to drive him home and put him in the field for a couple of hours as I couldn't bear the thought of him standing on the lorry all day in the heat! It also allowed a nice opportunity for a back scratch with his best bud ;)

We headed back a couple of hours later with my instructor and found that we had posted a dressage score of 30.2 which was pretty damn respectable :) and left us in 8th position in a huge section. Emily Baldwin had done the most beautiful test before me and was on a score of 29 so I was thrilled with Murphy :) Particularly as we had straight-talking had List 1 judges!

Murphy warmed up a little casually for the show jumping and my instructors observation was that he was looking a little "strung out". This phrase is cropping up a lot so I worked quite hard on keeping him much more together as I went into the ring. This resulted in me being totally backwards to fences 1-3 but Murphy sprouted wings and was very careful indeed despite being underpowered on deep spots. We then came round to fence 4 and the back rail caught us out and I knew I couldn't keep asking him to jump from the backwards canter so rode forwards again and he was beautifully careful over the next upright and tricky double of uprights and then related 4 to a white gate. Round to the biggest oxer on the course which he sailed easily. We were a bit deep to the planks but he jumped it cleanly then we turned the corner to the final treble. We had a lovely stride in but he dropped his legs on back rail and then jumped 2 uprights out cleanly.

8 faults... yet again! Well at least we are consistent :p  It's always behind and he just doesn't seem to finish his jump. Ho hum, it was our first crack at an IN course and plenty of others played skittles too so I can't be too disappointed.

The cross country seemed to be causing all sorts of problems as it was on the technical side with combination after combination, and very little in the way of let up fences. Hardly anyone was going near the time so I decided to give it a good crack as the ground was surprisingly good and Murphy really excels across the country. He rocketed around the course making mincemeat of the tricky lines and technical questions, getting plenty of pats as we galloped on. The final combination on the course was a step up with a bounce to a log on top, and then a slope down to an angled pallisade skinny which was on a bit of a yuk distance which walked as 3.5 strides if you went straight. I had really opened him up in the gallop up to the step and was pretty brave and waited as long as I could to bring him back. He bounded up the step and jumped very boldly over the log. He then surged away and I stupidly sat like a sack of spuds and Murphy didn't even register what the question was so when I tugged the right rein I was just given a slap in the face by the flag for my efforts :o 20 penalties. Ugh. He happily popped the alternative and finished 25 seconds over, which goes to show that we were well on track for finishing inside the time which would have left us in 6th place.

I am absolutely devastated to have put 20 penalties on my little hero's record as he absolutely did not deserve that. 100% a result of diabolical riding from yours truly :o However, I am absolutely determined to turn the whole experience into a positive, and we certainly weren't alone with more than 50% of my section having xc penalties. The blip has been a very long time coming and I have been well aware that I have been getting far too complacent across the country on Murphy and been very lazy in my riding because he has never really needed me to help him out. If I want to ride at intermediate level then I need to remember that we are a 2-man team and Murphy will need a bit of support every now and again! I really hope that this will just have been a much needed kick up the behind :)

The very lovely lady from John Britter Photography has given me full permission to share this lovely photo with you. It's the first of the 2 angled ducks on 3 strides which he jumped perfectly :)

So Babury next for the ON which will hopefully be our last run before Hartpury CCI* in August :)

Red velvet cupackes for all you hardcore report readers who have made it this far ;)

Lovely report as always :). Huge congrats on your dr - the List 1 judge at C is very, very no-nonsense so that is a very good score indeed. You looked great xc and Murphy looked very smiley when I saw you whilst I was walking the BE100. And the xc was causing chaos all over the course. I know you are beating yourself up but you are one of 4 people that day that I can usually count on to go clear xc and they all had stops, so you were definitely not alone. :)

Dont give yourself a hard time, I dont think there is an event horse registered with BE that doesnt have an xc penalty at some point in their career. It happens, and at least you know how to deal with it.

Both boys are looking super scrummng gorgeous and god knows how you keep them both so clean. Our mare is a nightmare, and she only has white socks and a white bum to keep clean. Great dressage score though and good luck for the rest of the season.

Fab report, well done and a dressage score I can only dream of :-) A real shame about the 20 penalties, sure it is just a minor blip -but also sounds like you were in very good company that day, someone else I know got eliminated at the skinnies in the novice on Friday and they are also a super experienced combination!

Sounds like a good day, don't worry about the blip, will sharpen you up as you say.

I can relate to your SJ issues. I struggle with the whole getting enough canter "v" balance. Just a though on his hind leg issues, have you considered "cheating" with back boots. I have some that are pretty kind but just help her make a better shape over the fence.

Good luck for Barbury, that always looks like a fab event.

He looks amazing and I'm sure he doesn't care about his 20 pens :)

Brilliant report and I love that you think your dressage had major blips on a score like that :p

Love your grey boys - although I don't envy you keeping them both clean!

Not qualified to comment on anything else though!

It was good to see you, albeit briefly, in the XC warm up! That last combination was tricky to say the least on the straight line, easy to misread.

Congratulations on the excellent dressage, shame about the 20 pens but as you say you won't make that mistake again!

Thank you for sharing! I'd consider that a pretty good day personally ;)

Just a thought from a showjumper here- would a pair of Veredus pro jump (pinch) back boots help at all? Someone else further up mentioned a bit of help from some boots, and those woul be my recommendation..... If of course they are legal for you guys?!

Gosh that sounds like a great day out - can understand you being annoyed about missing the skinny (I did the same at my first 100 on Saturday, also due to trusting horse to know where he was going  ) but really on the scale of things, sounds like a really good day. What a fabulous dressage score and in such esteemed company :D

I love reading your reports :)

Having read the thread about people not responding to reports, I thought I'd add my bit here too :) Really enjoyed reading your thread, and v envious of your being able to be so confident of your boy xc. Although I don't compete, sounds like 20 on an otherwise clean record is some good s*** !! And am mightily impressed with those plaits !

:) MAHOOOOSIVE congrats to you too! What an absolutely bloomi'brilliant result! I bet you are the proudest Mummy ever :D :D
I daren't ask which bits of the XC round you saw - it wasn't our most polished ;) :o
I think I am just about done with beating myself up, and it certainly helps that I wasn't the only one to have a frustrating day :) Still can't believe we missed each other AGAIN though!

Persil, persil and more persil :) The poor things no it's party time when the hose pipe gets un-reeled :) Thanks for a lovely comment - very best of luck for the rest of your season too :D

I love reading your reports, and of course seeing your photos of the lovely Murph :)

Thank you! I shall keep them coming - hopefully more successful ones next time ;)

Well Mattingley certainly came back with a bang! I'm just so horrified to have put the 20 pens on Murphy's record but I guess he is none the wiser :p

Hiya :) Have you come across any schooling exercises that help with that? I think I need to school much more in my "jumping" canter and ignore the dressage one for a while. Lots of forward and back, and simple changes?!

I have considered back boots but not got round to it yet - have you noticed a considerable difference? And which ones do you use? They are quite pricey but would be worth it if effective as poles keep dropping me out of top spots!!

He looks amazing and I'm sure he doesn't care about his 20 pens :)

Ahh thank you!! Heheh trust me the second canter strike off was like a baby elephant learning to run :o we had legs everywhere lol!! Hopefully if I can iron the mistakes out then the sky is the limit, and we might even be able to afford a pole or two!!

I love Murphey, what a dude!

Thank you!! He is a total dude :D

Another Murph fan here, he looks great! :)

Welcome to Murphy's fabclub, he seems to have attracted quite a following :D

Great report . and another who is impressed at how clean your 2 always look :-)

Thank you!! I do allow 2 hours to scrub and plait - I'm terribly OCD!!

No need to sack the jockey :p what a good first run at intermediate, and an amazing dressage, really well done :D

Hehehe, ok, a disciplinary instead perhaps?!! I shouldn't be too disappointed as he made the rest feel like childs play :)

Love your grey boys - although I don't envy you keeping them both clean!

Not qualified to comment on anything else though!

Thank you! I am very lucky indeed ;)

It was good to see you, albeit briefly, in the XC warm up! That last combination was tricky to say the least on the straight line, easy to misread.

Hey - was really good to see you! I thought I recognised that handsome Wally of yours! How did you guys get on? I was faaaar too free through there. Oh how I would love the chance to re-ride that!! Oops! Where are you guys next?

Congratulations on the excellent dressage, shame about the 20 pens but as you say you won't make that mistake again!

Thank you! Absolutely! I will not be leaving anything to chance next time :D

Hey Llanali - thanks so much for commenting. I will definitely look into Veredus! I wonder if there is a way I could try some before I fork out... will keep an eye on ebay! Have you found them to make much of a difference?

All the best people run past skinnies hey ;) :p Actually, i'm quite glad Murphy didnt jump it having been presented so badly - I need this lesson!!

Thank you - I shall keep them coming :)

:) Thank youuuu!! I absolutely love plaiting :) and doing it in the sunshine is even better! I am so lucky to have Murph - he fills me with such confidence across the country. he is worth his weight in diamond-encrusted-gold:D

Lovely report, and very bad luck on the 20 but you are doing a great job at finding the positives (rightly!)

Hopefully see you at Barbury, but hope you used a Super Special as they have over 70 entered for the ON and 280 (I think!) for the Novice sections

He did manage to redeem himself after the naughty hi ho silver moments in the dressage with a really lovely XC round :D We're at Salperton next weekend and then need to decide if we head to Tweseldown for the Int or Brightling for the CIC*! What about you guys?

x

I figured if the glass isn't half full then I may as well give up now ;) :p It's still niggling, and probably won't stop niggling until I have got back out on a cross country course and righted my wrong :D

Absolutely everything crossed for Barbury for both of us as looks like a heavy ballot inevitable... I super stickered mine so hopeful but you never know! Would love to meet you if we are both lucky enough to get in :)

Another joining the murphy fan club :D Sounds like a fab weekend and he looks so happy in all the pictures.

Join the queue ;) :D Funnily enough he is the grumpiest git ever unless he is doing the job he loves :D

What a brilliant run! he really is a lovely horse. cant see him having any problems with intermediate!

Thanks BeckyC :) I'm sure he won't have any problems.. it's the rider we need to worry about :p  :o

Oh good boy Wally!! that certainly makes up for it as there were plenty of places to be caught out!! We have Barbury ON, and then Hartpury CCI*. I'm desperate for an Intermediate run but can't just yet as that would make me ineligible for the grassroots on my other horse so it's a balancing game at the moment and I'm having to occupy myself with INs and 1 stars! Really hope to see you out and about on the circuit again soon - our catch up was far too brief!! :) x

Well done anyway. It's frustrating when it's your fault but at least it was yours and not his. It's all experience.

Re the boots I've jumped a couple of horses in them & not necessarily found huge benefits but they do help. Don't use them all the time but just at shows, and you could put them on as you are waiting to go in ring after you've warmed up if you have a helper. Have a practise at home first too in case he doesn't like them!

I'd lend you mine to try but I need them almost constantly at the moment for one thing or another! Perhaps someone might have a pair you could try?

Put it this way, they aren't going to make an elephant jump a puissance, but yes I have found they can make the difference and provide the edge. I personally prefer them to weighted boots etc. and find the Veredus better than Doda 'magic' boots, or 'Flicker' boots. They don't work for all, but if you get something a bit casual behind, they can encourage that extra two inches which makes the difference in my experience :)
