A little while ago I wondered if you thought it was being a bit "mid-life crisis" to start jumping a horse again after a break of, blimey, it's 30 years. Your were all great and encouraging.
Anyway, hit the deck today - again a first for about 30 years.

Bounced quite nicely, just a slightly bruised hip to show for it. Was forced to get back on and do evil jump that made me eat dirt. Wanted to wimp out, but, as I say, instructor was simply not allowing for that. Glad she did. Just wondering what on earth it will feel like next week.

Also wondering why I am doing this to myself? Knitting must bemore suitable at my age and safer -as long as you don't poke a knitting needle in your eye

But statistically, lots of people are killed falling out of bed...or by their electric blanket...or worse still, DIY...you might as well go out with a bang as a whimper (or possibly both

Just don't try knitting whilst riding...

It is hard, in fact after a 5 year break from SJ and never ever wanting to XC as terrified, I am now in the situation of having a very good eventer (gulp) that I cannot find a good rider for so am having to be brave enough ( or at least trying to) go straight into novice myself with only a place to put us intermediate.

Trust your horse if you can, if you do it will come or so I am told, and we are never ever to old to get wth grips to new things.

Will let you know in April lol.

Well I don't know how old you are but if you had a 30 year break from riding then i'm guessing at least a little older than me lol! I took a break of 20 years and in that time gained a few ( well a lot actually ! ) pounds and lost a lot of fitness too. The first few times I came off it hurt quite a lot

Certainly days 2 and 3 were the worst...but something I have realised is that you never lose the ability to fall carefully (assuming you had it in the first place

). In the two and a bit years i've been back in the saddle now i've come off at least a dozen times....nearly always when the horse has said 'no' at a fence and i've carried on

Hope you don't hurt too much in the morning

I have found it is not the falling that hurts(only a little pride lost, lol)it is always a couple of days later when i think "OUCH,i dont remember falling on that bit"lol

I'm in a similar position to the OP - mid life crisis!! (there are worse things i could be doing!!). i returned to riding after a 20 year break and started jumping - complete with several falls, usually when the horse has refused and i have sailed over the jump! A series of falls did knock my confidence quite abit rather than actually hurt me. I'm getting back into it now but keeping to 2'6" atm, within my comfort zone. So keep on jumping, you could get run over by a bus!!

I did the same had a 16 year break and then went hunting ! was doing really well until we came to a hedge with a ditch, someone yelled kick on (I had been sipping the hip flask a bit) well I kicked on threw myself forward and sailed through the air about 2 feet higher than my horse and landed on his ears. fightened myself to death. I am now just learning to get my bum back ! not launch myself cant think why I had just completely lost the feel for it I thought it would be like riding a bike !

Jella, I so know what you are saying here. In my head, I am still riding those courses, quite big ones, that I did when young. Now, I am so far up horse's shoulder, he can easily dump and go! Have to do it all again on Tuesday. Oh God, help!
