I'm no fan of this odious man but I am becoming increasingly concerned that this whole matter is taking on tones of the Stalinist purges. Hardly a day goes by when someone is not arrested and held on suspicion of some child offence. Really, is EVERYONE up to no good in this country?

Beware the knock on the door :(

I wonder whether a lot of these are "in connection" with the investigation as opposed to being accused of any abuse, as reported.

Interesting topic on radio 4 a couple of days ago. Basically once we have been told a story and believe it and then said story is contradicted, our brain finds it hard to change the mental picture. Almost hope he is guilty as the damage that has and is being done would be horrendous to an innocent party. Appreciate the police must have been feeling quite confident so as not to expose themselves to lawsuits, but I am not comfortable with names in the public domain when not yet proven guilty.

Yes a witch hunt springs to mind , our obsession of Judging the past useing present ideas does seem a little strange .. good thread running on www.pistonheads.com (news and poiltics)

Whatever form of child abuse alleged to have been perpetrated by MC may or may not have happened. . If it has, whether it happened in the past is irrelevent, imo. I cannot think of a time in which child abuse was any more an acceptable practice than it is today. However, social culture has changed a great deal in the last 50 years: what was 'hushed up' or explained away during the intervening years has become sayable, and the possibility of complaints not being believed, hushed up or ignored has lessened. The effects of such abuse can ruin lives. Why should perpetrators not suffer life long anxiety about what would happen if their victims spoke up?

In response to Daffodil's query as to whether "EVERYONE is up to no good in this country", no, I don't believe they are. But s/he would probably be very surprised if they knew who was, the number of them, and the position in society which they hold.
