Have you measured his bone. ie diameter of cannon bone ,at the upper part, lower part of front legs. He looks to have a lot of TB type quality, and I assume he is not a youngster or aged. He will carry your weight better if he is fit, and you are fit.
Are his withers higher than his hindquarters, and is his conformation and balance generally good.

he's a 6 year old unbroken standardbred ,he has 9 inch of bone and he's 15.3
lol, he looks just like my boy, who is a 15.00 standardbred aged seven.
He has plenty of bone, so will carry you all day out hunting.
Good hind feet too, I would try for barefoot riding, he has put on a bit of weight n'est pa?

20% of his body weight. Assuming he doesn't have health issues such as arthritis, old tendon injuries, etc, etc.

ETS;... the health issues info is for the benefit of general HHO readership, not you in particular.

It seems that HHO has become paranoid with weight!

You don't tell us how tall or heavy you are - if you are over 6ft and weigh 24 st then I am afraid that you are too big for your horse ;)

But I guess this is unlikely ;)

thank you for your replies,i'm 10st 7 and 5foot 5,mrs D123 definatley (sp) staying barefoot, the farrier has said he has really strong feet, and he has put on a lot of weight since i had him :D

Just be sensible, most healthy ponys and horses can adapet to weight, you only have to visit riders around the world, a small strong animal can carry much greater weights than a tall leggy animal,

A 10 stone bad rider is heavier to carry than a 15 stone good rider,

LOL - sorry 10st 7 - you are seriously having a laugh ;-) he will hardly feel you on his back!

I really do think there is some kind of obsession about weight going on on here. Seriously, OP take a look at some of the racing weights and some hunting photos.

i know it's stupid i've never bothered about my weight before, but when you start reading some of the threads,i guess i was getting a bit paranoid ,thanks for that:D

Gp egg and bacon coming up lol,i've had just over 12months and he was a bag of bones when l had him so i've taken this time to gain his trust, thankfully he is a real softie but we will see

Aww poor thing!

I can't find the pics on Ginger when we firt had him, he looked a state! His feet were a mess, count every rib and vertebre, ad he was EVIL! 6 months of stuffing him full of equilibra (they had it on free trial offer at the time and EVERYONE we knew had a bag sent to them free!), and he looked amazing! Fat yes, but lovely and shiny, nice tough feet, slightly less evil! Once he started working the fat went and I was left with a lovely looking fit horse.

Want to take the calories of that sarnie too? Unfortunately at 5'9 and 12.13st I DO need to diet!:p

no problem GP my motto is if i cut it in half it's half the calories :D,Took a while to put weight on him to,didn't help his previous owner had given him a full clip and just chucked him a field with no rug on over winter.
