Maxtra & The animal clipper expert. Cheaper Clippers on ebay. Advise

Im looking a buying some clippers and have been searching ebay. I cant really afford £150 plus but came across a few cheaper and un-named brands. Just wondered if anyone on here had any experiance good & bad of these makes.

OR could recommend anyother cheaper brands.

I appreciate they might not last years but clipping 3 horses at 3 times a year I would be happy for them to last a year. Local hire is about £25 so they would pay for themselves within a year and nice to have at hand if I fancy a tidy inbetween.

I cant give any insight, however I shall be watching this thread with interest I too could do with a set of clippers, but really dont wish to fork out silly amounts lol

Very good thread on Stable Yard on clippers, 2nd hand clipper, cheap clippers, etc.

Basically don't touch cheap bay clippers if you have any consideration for your horse .... you will probably only end up replacing them next year and may cause your horse horrible problems in the meantime.

Suggest you read thread if you are thinking of buying new clippers, v informative!!

I do not sell horse clippers and neither does the company I work for so I would hope that with relevance to this thread, it would insure me against bias.

As a repair technician there is one thing that stands out. You may get many reviews on H&H and similar saying they are bril...never had any problems..quiet...powerful..etc etc. The problem however is not when they work.

The problem is when they don't. It is my suggestion that you will not hear a review that says, 'my kazakhstani clippers broke but I just returned them from where I bought them, they carried out repairs the same day and sent them back to me FOC'

You are more likely to hear 'I am regretting buying my kazakhstani clippers because when they had a fault the people I bought them from didn't have a clue about clippers. They had no spare parts or know how so didn't know where to start with regards to correcting the situation. As they were not clued up on clippers they tried to make out it was my fault for using them which apparently invalidates the warranty (OK, last bit was a slight exaggeration!)

There is allot to be said about buying from someone who know clippers. A recognized brand has parts stacked up in clipper repair workshops across the country and the knowledge and expertise available and relevant to them is easy to come by. TheEngineer suggests buying a clipper between friends. Cost split three ways you can get a nice clipper for your money.

I have no experience with any non branders as I wont entertain looking at them but inquire of TheEngineer, he may know a thing or two about them.

Mentioning no brands specifically but you also have to be careful that these things comply with H&S, if they weren't made especially for the UK market the safety standards may not be what we expect here.

Also, enquire of clipper repair firms. There is a fair chance they have a pile of 2nd hand parts stashed away for the borderline expense job. You may find one that could build you a 2nd hand clipper from good quality second hand spares for somewhere near your budget.

I wouldn't suggest buying a 2nd hand set off ebay unless they have just been serviced and you can attain a technicians report or job sheet on them.

A clipper may seem 'as good as new' to the seller with the most honest intentions but really, when you take the case off, its been hammered with WD40 and there is grease all over the armature and its only a matter of usage hours before the motor gives up rendering them a waste of money.
