Im so excited, have had a trial visit from a Clumber spaniel in need of rehoming. I was worried about my dog being possessive of me and his home and not accepting another dog in the house. We met in a local park, all fine, met in the fosterers home, all OK, except for a bit of growling on my dogs part when other dog got too close, but other dog just walked off. Took him to my house and it went really well, my dog did the growling thing but nothing else, other dog explored the house and garden, managed to stroke both dogs together without incident. I truly didn't think my dog would accept another dog in his house. We are having another get together at the weekend when other dog might stay overnight ! Clumber has been kennelled so doesn't know about being in a house but seems quite well trained otherwise. He has not been neutered and my dog has, could this be an issue?

Ooh exciting, hope it all goes to plan. Can't help with the neutering if their males as I only ever have bitches, spayed, and have never had any aggression issues when introducing a new one.
A clumber is an unusual breed to need a new home.

Hope you like slobber and hair! :D

If this is a private rehome, get a copy of the pedigree and get someone in the know in the breed to give it a once over - there are a LOT of health problems in this numerically small breed, some are well publicised, others much less so and some issues appear to be line dependent.

gunnerdog, I previously had two Gordon setters about 20 years ago so was well accustomed to slobber and hair. Must admit after a very clean non slobbering dog it who doesn't even like going out in the rain it will be a bit of a shock ! Must I expect leg cocking and poo indoors, he is apparently clean in his present kennel? Not had a dog needing housetraining before as all were previous rehomed dogs that were older and house trained ! I know about the health problems related to the breed, I don't think this dog is very well bred, but I will deal with what comes.

If he is clean in the kennel it should be relatively easy to get him clean in the house, especially if you use a crate (indoor kennel). I would limit access to just one room at first then once he is clean in there extend his area. Take him outside to the place you want him to toilet when you think he needs to go (won't be as often as a pup as he will have more control) and praise him for toileting there.

You make find he wants to mark once he finds his feet, castrating him may help with this if you get it done before it becomes a habit.

I love Clumbers.

Well Im panicking a bit at the moment about how to proceed with getting an outside dog inside ! He has been kennelled with other dogs so not been alone, especially at night. I do have a dog crate which Im not sure yet is big enough, but it is too big to put any where without me tripping over it. Unfortunately my totally spoilt dog sleeps upstairs on my bed and I don't want to have to shut him up downstairs, so am toying with the idea of taking crate up to bedroom although don't think dog has been crated. Beginning to get cold feet now ! I am so totally in a rut with my dog as he never does anything wrong,so I have got to get my head around essentially puppy proofing a house for a very large puppy. I already know he can reach the kitchen worktops so I will have to keep the kitchen tidy, quelle horreur !

Watching your other dog may well train him about toileting outside, along with tons of praise and regular taking out after meals etc. Where are you thinking of keeping him and will both dogs eventually be together if they get on.

Where are the pics?! Clumbers are fab looking, don't recall slobber when I met about a dozen at the CLA.

If he is clean in his kennel it really shouldn't take long to train him. I know what you mean though, I keep thinking I should get a rescue/rehome and then I think how easy puppies are (bar the endless peeing!).

And teething and whining and teaching to walk on the lead!

CT don't have pics as don't want to get too involved until I know he will be staying ! The plan is for him to live indoors with other dog
