there are a couple of horse owning families in the village whoes horsemanship and management leaves a lot to be desired to put it mildly. RSPCA have been called to them in the winter they have trashed peoples paddocks, barked trees, wrecked fences and so on. They are related and it sees to be a rivalry thing going on,both families having more horses than they can cope with TBH but both refusing to sell any, presumably loss of face. After years of this they now find it difficult to get places to rent. they wont pay/cant afford livery even DIY and so go around the farmers getting cheap grazing and hay but they leave everything such a mess that the farmers wont have them now. So ,winter is coming along and they are pestering me for my paddock. Now i dont do liveries and I look after my land. They see its green and growing and are pestering. they have been told, each autumn for years that the answer is NO. but you get the sob story "I cant afford............etc". I have helped them out with sourcing some old cheap hay for them a couple of years ago as I felt sorry for the horses and now every autumn and winter its pester pester. I do have hay for sale and they wont pay the price but hang around thinking I will reduce the price which I most defanitely will not. Sorry to moan but my good turn a couple of years ago has turned out to be a wrong thing to have done. Why cant people live within their means, have just 1 or 2 horses and do them well? Lots of us in the village are fed up with them . Phew, feel a little better for off loading, its hjust that they make me feel so mean by not having them on /selling them hay at below cost and I always find myself explaining why I cant to them instead of just saying No and walking away and I go away feeling I am bad.

Oh lord, this sounds horribly familiar. Someone we are aware of does pretty much this and has run out of places to go. Doesn't give the horses the correct care, changes them with depressing regularity and a dealer by any other name I think.

You probably feel sorry because of the horses as it is always them that suffer when they are unfortunate enough to be owned by people like this

Some people just never learn. If you can't afford the ones you've got, then get rid. This type of thing really gets on my nerves too. You sound like a sweet hearted person, but if you carry on helping them out then they'll just take, take, take.

Say no, you can't afford to give them any of your land and you haven't got time to source hay for them.

Good lord - some people!

Keep saying no and, when you get the sob story that they can't afford to pay the going price, tell them straight that, in that case, they'll have to sell the horses. You're not running a charity.

How on earth do they manage it? I am a GOOD livery, and would kill for someone to let me have a little bit of land and hay to retire my lad on! Not a clue how to even contact farmers. It seems ridiculous that even though we live in the countryside, we can't find an acre of land for one small horse!

But that's my rant stealing your thread, sorry :D

It's because of people like this that you can't get land!

Horsesforever1 - don't give in, the horses are not your responsibility and these people are just hoping you will feel sorry for them and save them some money. Typical scroungers - bet they've got satellite TV though!

Don't feel bad, tough up instead. These people are freeloaders, wanting everything for nothing and not respecting the people who help them.
Imagine if you had the horses on your land, you'd feel even worse when witnessing their lack of care over the winter. Helping them won't make the horses lives better in the long term. You'd be left worrying when a vet was needed and not called out, or if one was dropping condition and not rugged/fed appropriately. Imagine the scenario of waking up each morning and thinking I'm going to speak to them today about..(insert any one of a multitude of problems..)

And if you could afford to sell hay below cost, if I come and harass you for long enough, can I have a few bales please. Delivered and gift wrapped.:D

Don't feel bad, you're too nice for even listening to them.

make sure your fields are padlocked!

It sounds like the extreme but if these people are getting desperate then I would do as Captainmouse says... if they run out of time and have no where to go then the only option is to put the horses into a field until they get sorted which could be a very long time :(
My biggest fear would be that they do get to the day with no time left and approach charities who do not have room... what future do these horse have then? The owner needs to have their backsides kicked into gear and sort out something now but sounds like they just live each day as it comes.

With out sounding awfully harsh, its not really the OP's problem lilclomax....and there are worse things than a well placed bullet should the need arise.
If they cant afford basic livery, then what on earth are they going to do if one needs the vet?
They would be better of as long leat specials frankly.
OP toughen up. Tell them the answer is NO will always be NO and the price of hay is what it is, and if they dont have that money in CASH then bugger off and dont come back wasting your time!
If nobody helps them, then they will have to sort the problem themselves...which is what they should have done years ago by the sound of it!
