Hi,

Thought i'd share the photos of Maya at Crufts earlier this month. We got 2nd in the Open bitch class behind the CC winner (and last years top basenji!!!) and beat several dogs from overseas, including one all the way from America. VERY pleased with that as we werent sure the judge would like her, and Maya's pups were only 3 months old!! she got her figure back well!! Had a lot of very nice comments about her so going to try and get her out more this year, see if we cant get the other two CCs she needs maybe. We spent last year concentrating on Logan, but i love showing Maya....

UnaB, I love seeing pictures of Maya, I think the basenji is a stunning looking breed but I have to say i know nothinbg about them - where do they originate from and what are they - terrier breed or what? They are small to medium size is that right? are there not many in the UK? I only say as I have never ever seen one in the flesh as it were.

Just being nosey I guess! :)

Many congrats on the result at Crufts! :D

Though I do have to say what's not to like about the gorgeous Maya! And I'm amazed at how quickly she got her figure back..............*looks for the 'green with envy' icon:eek:*

Evie's also looking good - how old is she now? Sorry, hopeless memory!:D

Thanks guys :D

ladyt25 - Basenjis come from Africa. They are used by the Pygmy tribes in the congo as hunting dogs. They dont bark as they are needed to be quiet so as not to spook the "prey" so that the hunters can spear it :D Nice... lol They are technically a hound, they're in the hound group, but they used to be classed as terriers as sometimes still get called "Congo Terriers". They are (arguably) one of the oldest breeds of dog, theres paintings of them dating back to Ancient Egypt and theres even pictures of them found in the Pyramids. Im sure i read somewhere that Cleopatra had a pair of basenjis :D They are about 16-17" tall and are a rare breed over here, only about 4-5 litters born a year and they all generally come into season once a year at the same time - something which shows how primitive they still are :) They certainly arent a pet i'd recommend for everyone, we were VERY fussy about where Maya's pups went. A lot of people like them cos they dont bark, smell or moult much at all but they are far from easy to own lol!!

NS - Evie was 1year old on 21st Feb - big girl now :D

Thanks - it's interesting to know where these dogs come from as you just don't see them about at all (now I know why). No barking eh - that sounds lovely, my one LOVES the sound of her own voice, it must be divine to have a non-barking one! :D
