hi
i have just bought a 3 year old palamino pony
which i was told he was fully gelded but now i suspect he is a rig as he has tried to mount a mare all the time
when i went to see him he was alovely quite pony
and the woman said that he would make show pony but now i do not trust him. we have had a blood test done just waiting to hear what is the out come. but if he comes back as a rig i dont know what to do
the vet said the best thing is to have him put down as i only paid a few hundred for the pony any help thank you

Don't panic yet, my friends gelding used to mount my mare all the time, he is not a rig (he is now turned out with other geldings only). Seems my mare is a tart, as was caught backing into him when in season.

Don's panic. My horse as quite riggy when I bought him but he isn't a rig, was just gelded late and used as a stallion for a couple of years when he was younger.

At my last yard he was out with a mixed group for a couple of weeks (against my wishes!!) and it was a disaster - he was mounting the mares all the time and chasing the other gelding away. YO moved him into a single sex field with the other randy geldings and he's fine now. I just have to make sure he's turned out with other geldings only. He will still call to the girls if one walks past when we ride, but he really calmed down when separated from the mares.

My boy is perfectly well behaved at shows around the ladies.

thanks for the advice, ill just wait for the results but he is such a pretty horse i could never put him down as the vet has advised i would either try to find the money for an op. or sell him as a rig to someone who doesnt have any mares. i am very annoyed with original owner who must have known and is not answering any of my calls.

My horse has always been quite cresty and stallion-like in his presence, but he is fully gelded - however, I keep meaning to get a blood test analysed just incase. Whilst he's quite possessive over mares he hasn't got the foggiest what to do with them so my assumption is he was quite late but was never used as a stallion.

Dependent on the result of the tests, look into Agnus Castus. I feed it to Governor and he is markedly calmer and better behaved on it. There's a product called Hormonise on the market which is what I use.

I had a pony on my yard who at 40+ years old used to go 'all the way' it never did him any harm (probably what kept him going all those years LOL!) Apart form that behaviour, he was so easy to handle and no problem - wait and see, but I wouldn't put anything down without seeing if you can handle his behaviour.

does anyone know where i stand
on getting my money back and returning the pony to where i bought it from.
as the livery yard that i am on has mares so harry has to be stable untill i take him out which i do every day
he is a lovey looking young boy and i so well behaved in the stable and on his lunge rope the longer i keep him the harder it is going to be to let him go every day i see him i end up crying.
