Have been helping out at riding school for nearly 2 years now (I am 35 and started riding when I was 16 and then stopped when I was about 22 and got back into the saddle about 2 1/2 years ago) and have been toying with the idea of getting my own horse, but with one thing and another (like not finding the right horse at that time, then hubby applying for jobs abroad) it just hasn't happened :(

Now hubby has suggested finding someone who wants a sharer.
I would like other peoples take on this and the pros and cons for sharing someone elses horse.
I would like comments good or bad as I want to consider all possiblities.

Thanks

i shared for a year. My share ended due to Samuel getting impaction colic and starting to feel his age (21!). He was a joy to share, and it really improved my riding and stable management. I would recommend it, but ensure you have a contract drawn up between yourself and the owner plus get riders insurance out just in case. I'm now awaiting to hear from a rehoming centre about taking on an ex racer :D

I do it and I love it. I loved the horse and her owner was looking for someone to take on a full loan however I kind of knew she wasn't happy with doing that so I approached her and asked if she would think about me being a sharer. A year on and it's going great. I think it really works because we (the humans) get on well and keep the lines of communication open. She has come to trust me to look after her horse, how she wants her to be looked after, and not do anything without discussing it first. I'm very careful to ensure that I mention everything to her, if we don't ride together I send her a text when I'm leaving the yard so she knows all is well.

For me it's been great fun. The horse is as fab as I knew she would be, I feel totally involved in her care and welfare as well as enjoying riding her.
