Do you all buy a new riding hat after falling on your head?

Found my old skull cap, one I had on when I fell off D XC schooling and could'nt remember a thing, (still can't about that day) that I had thrown in the bin at yard about 6 months ago being used for YO's friends daughter who had not ridden before. I informed YO's OH what had happened to that hat and that it really was'nt safe. He told me ' It's ok, she won't fall off and anyway far worse has happened to it, I have washed it in the washing machine. Anyway it's better than nothing as a new one is about £40'

We did take it off of YO's friends daughter and gave her one of our hats. I have bought it home to throw it out. It amazes me that he would rather use it than buy one.
I know I'd rather spend the £40 on a new one

Yes I always get a new one after falling on my head. As an ex-motorcyclist I habitually cut the harness off any hat that is not safe to be ridden in, seen a couple of real nasties with people using knackered helmets.

When I got concussion I kept telling everyone over and over again that I needed a new hat. I got wound up about it a lot when I'd recovered and my yard manager insisted that she'd checked my hat and it was fine. I still bought a new one - its just not worth the risk. If you hit your head hard enough to get concussion it can't have done the hat any good.

I replaced mine after a fairly heavy fall, although it showed no signs of damage. People have odd attitudes though - we had a small kid turn up for a ride with a hat that had a visible crack in it. Father said it was fine as the inside was intact and that was the protective bit!! I think he meant that his little ray of sunshine was far too good a rider to fall off anyway.

That is the problem, the fact you cant see the stress caused to the hat. When they came into BSI though it is a different matter. Same with motorcycle helmets, which by the way should not contain stickers or be resprayed as it affects its ability to slide across the road if you come off.

Yes would buy a new one, they can be so cheap nowadays that it seems odd not to change it when your head is at risk!
