The great AP has just announced on Channel 4 that he will be retiring at the end of the season!

Nooooooooo! He is a legend in his own life time! He said he wants to out at the top as a champion. Fair play to the man - a champion every day of his career.

Enjoy chuck! It will be well earnt!

I got quite emotional watching him announce it.
At the tender age of 6 it was my love of AP that made me want to be a jockey when I grew up (15 years later I am definitely too tall, too fat and too wimpy!)
A well deserved retirement for an absolute legend - not sure we'll see one like him again.

He is a living legend and a genuinely nice lad in real life. He deserves a great retirement and i'm sure he will still be about to remind everyone of what the have to beat!

I'll admit that I wonder how a man, so driven and focussed, will now spend his days. I suspect that with his withdrawal from his life's work, it will almost be as a bereavement. For certain it will be as an amputation, and he will now need to find an outlet for his undoubted energies.

I'll also admit that I worry for him, a little.

Alec.

Yes I worry for him too. He will need to find something else to make the hairs on his neck stand up. I hope he stays within racing. He is a prime example of how a sportsman should behave. He has so much to share with the next generation.

I worry for his wife. Have you read his autobiography? He hasn't treated her too well in the past. I really rate him as a jockey but not as a husband.

Come on folks, he's not the first Great Jockey to retire. They all go through it at some stage. I'm sure he will go training, assistant trainer, presenter etc as most do. He will find it rather strange at first but will accustom to his 'new life'.
