I've got one. i've had it 2 years & it's been great. I can't think of anything bad to say about it. It's flown through it's plating the each year.
They are building all the time, so you don't have to wait ages. I wanted a specific spec of chasis & so waited a while until they could source one. Once they had that, i think it was 6 weeks.
I also had a few extras added which I'm pleased I did.
My husband its a lorry repairer, panel beater, coach worker whatever you want to call him but he will tell you its not the make its how its been lookeed after by its owner, unless you are buying new of course then this doesnt apply.
My friend has one and I have to say its not weathered well but she maintains the man who worked on it before my husband was pretty useless (it failed on a headlight bulb after paying over £200 for pre MOT)
I'm very happy with my box from there. I think they used to build the lorries for Ian McNeil years ago. You can test drive the chasis before you buy it. This means you can try a lots of different models before settling on what you want. They'll then build the body up to your own specifications.
We have had our Mcneills Lorry for about 5 years or so now and I have to say it's never let us down, and the flooring / chassis absolutely fine and there's plenty of room for large horses. All in all we have been really pleased with it- the only negative thing would be the quality of the paint on the foldaway step as it is slightly flaking away but it is quite a minor issue!.
I would definately shop around though as there are so many lorries out there to choose from!
I used to have a McNeil, had it for 2,1/2 years and it was always completely reliable, we stayed away in it a few times a year and it was always comfortable and everything worked properly. We never had any complaints about it.
aah- I've just realised- there are 2 Mcneils who sell lorries- we got ours from Ian McNeills in Alton- I'm not sure what the lorries are like from Julia Mcneills(?) just thought I'd mention it in case of any confusion!
its ian mcneil, thank you for your thoughts on this, i have trawled all over the place looking at second hand lorrys for about 25k and the condition of some of them have been very poor, hence why i think i might buy new, have spoken to ian mcneil and seems very nice but you hear stories all the time about various builders and its a heck of alot of money if something goes wrong or quality is poor.
With all the horror stories about of people leaving deposits for lorries to be built I would be happier purchasing a readymade one from a dealer TBH. That way you know the box is finished, you pay your money and you get the goods.
You also have protection should there be any finance outstanding on the chassis as motor traders (whether dealing in cars or lorrys) are responsible for the cost of an HPI check. If you do have the misfortune of buying a chassis with outstanding finance on it, from a dealer, it is the dealer who is liaible for settling the outstanding debt, not you.
It's Iain mcNeil I was talking about.
I paid about £27k for mine. As someone mentioned the only thing I've had a problem with (which I've just remembered
) is the hinge on the living step, which the paint seems to rub off & needs touching up each year.
I also looked at lots of second hand at simular prices & saw loads of rubbish, plus some that looked great until my mechanic checked them out
Iain was happy for my mechanic to check out the chasis, in their workshop. He picked up on a few very minor thing which were dealt with before it was built.
I have a Lorry from Ian Mcneil its the highbarn Harrier but with full spec for overnighters.
Its a fantastic lorry bought it 4 years ago & it's never let me down once including long journeys & over nighters. Paint work is fine but i do look after it it gets washed & waxed. Ian was the only horsebox builder who seemed to understand that i didnt want a big long lorry.
All i wanted was a 2 horse lorry with full overnight spec, what i got was exactly that & i still love the lorry today as much as i did when i bought it. I had people coming round looking at it at the regionals even though it's not for sale.
I would buy another.
Highbarn used to build for Ian and several other dealers until the went bust - made headlines in H&H! One of the reasons I would be happier seeing the finished product in front of me before parting with my hard earned cash.

Hi - they look after my lorry too, and i've always been happy - it was a private sale but the lorry was at his yard. And you may find it's Julia McNeil's lot who share his yard and build from there - Pepper Harrow Horse Boxes. Ian, the ex-husband is in Alton, and goes by the name of McNeill Horseboxes.
We have had our Ian Mc Neil lorry for 3 years and have been very pleased with it.
In the first 6 months there was a problem with the fuel pump but they paid for my local garage to do the repairs as we live miles away from Alton - I was impressed with this I must say!
A few little things have broke and worn out - like a couple of cupboard hinges etc but I'm sure all lorries will have this and we have had plenty of use out of it.
