Hi

does anyone have any experiences with MDR1 dogs and living with horses, sheep and cattle?

High on our short list of breeds are smooth collies in which mutation is wide spread-just wondering how high the risk is with residual drugs in dung etc.

Some good info here...also a long breed list of breeds susceptible, which may influence your choice...at the bottom of the link is your question answered...smooth collies are on there.

Can eating feces cause an MDR1 reaction?

If a dogs with the MDR1 mutation eats feces from horses or livestock that have recently been dosed with Ivermectin or related worming products the dog may suffer a reaction. These reactions can be lethal. It isn’t clear how long Ivermectin and related medications will persist after excretion. However, reported reactions were linked to feces from horses and sheep that had been treated within a couple days prior to the incident.

If your dog has even one copy of the MDR1 mutation, keep it away from horses and livestock that have recently been wormed. If you don’t know your dog’s MDR1 status, you should get the dog tested.

My sons friend has an Australian shepherd who has recently started fitting...5 fits so far...we are going to test the dog for mdr1 to see what his status is. The vet has gone straight to phenobarbital..the dog recently had a series of vacs, one for long term filaria prevention..I'm thinking this could be a trigger if the dog is mdr1 positive..these collie breeds definitely seem high risk!
