When I hacked Chloe out at her old home she was in a standing martingale. And hell she needed it! Plan to take her to this sponsored ride, so I will need something that will do a similiar job, but I can't use a standing because we'll be jumping. Obviously will only take her if she is safe, and we are hacking her out lots atm (without a martingale) to get her a little calmer and so she realises that she doesn't actually need to leap about the moment we set foot on grass.

So, any suggestions please? Am tempted just to try a running one and go for a 'test ride' although I don't see why they put her in a standing one if she would be fine in a running one...

Any tips/advice appreciated. thanks

Why does she need a standing?

[/ QUOTE ]

Shoves her head in the air rather high....we currently don't use a martingale on her, don't really like the standing ones myself so trying to avoid it atm! she is getting a little better, very slowly, and personally I would rather, at home, solve the problem rather than conceal it. However at shows/sponsored rides/hunting, that is just how she is, or so I have been told by her old owners, and I can imagine it very easily!

Try the running and if you need to put a knot in each of the leathers to shorten them. i know the fit will not be technically correct but you will gain more leverage if you do need it and can still give her as much of her head as you want to enable her to jump.

I did this with a pony mare many years ago and it worked really well. you just need to watch the length of rein when you are at lower speeds,, be aware you may need to givemore of it.

Do you mean tie knots in the leathers of the martingale which attatch to the reins?
I will try that then, thank you!

My old hunter used to throw his head way up in the air on the way in to a jump. If he was ridden in a running martingale the throwing of the head would then be followed by a series of spectacular lipizaaner type leaps. In a standing however he would just give an annoyed little sideways flick of his head & then revert to a more normal head carriage
Don't see why you can't use the standing if it's properly adjusted. Just open any copy of H & H & have a look at the hunting or BSJA reports. There's loads of pictures of horses jumping huge fences wearing Standing M.gales. If you put on a running martingale, when it comes in to play (ie when your horses raises it's head) the downward action will be on the corners of the mouth, as the m.gale will pull down on the rein. A standing works on the nose, & as I say correctly adjusted shouldn't prevent the horse from jumping comfortably.

yes I saw that too actually in H & H today! Thing is she loves to use her head when jumping, especially when they are of an okay size. I could just see me underneath her if I tried to jump her in a standing tbh, but I will try and running first and if that doesn't help then I guess we will have to reconsider the standing option.

I can see in the pic in your siggy she brings her head right down, does she stretch it out too? The standing may restrict her abit. Try the running and if that doesn't work, maybe a standing that is a bit longer than it should be, just to stop her whacking you on the nose but so she can still stretch her neck when jumping?

Just a word of warning the horse I ride tossed its head around etc and I was convinced that there was something wrong with her, her owner is not very experienced adn was up for just putting a standing martingale on her, I am lucky in that I work with top quality dentist, saddle fitter and chiropract, so I had her treated, fer teeth were horrendous, despite the fact that the owner had got in a dentist about 6 months before (he took 10 minutes and didn't even use a gag!!) and her saddle was very narrow (the owner had some cheap cheerful person check it in the summer when the horse was enormous compared to what she was when I had it checked) and was really hurting her and she had her poll out.as well as a few vertebrae were out of line. Anyway I forked out for a new saddle had her teeth done and back sorted and no more tossing her head!

You could always put a running martingale on, an if yoon the ride you're finding it's not working, put the rings that normally attach to the reins through the noseband, so it acts as a standing martingale.

That isn't her hehe! She just quite likes to use her head, but not that much. Especially out hunting and sponsored rides etc, if the jumps are a bit bigger I would much prefer it for her to be able to really use her self so we don't crash through them lol!

I am getting a back person out soon just to check everything is in check though.

Can't really help, but she sounds just like jigsaw used to be - leaping, jogging, sideways cantering etc everytime we went into a field!! With perseverence he will now walk calmly for the whole ride, and is no longer silly the moment we enter a field! Definately hack her as often as poss

Jig is ridden in a running martingale so might be worth a try

Why dont you borrow a hunting breastplate if you can and start riding her in that, means if need be you could always put the running attachment in your pocket if you need it on the ride, and that can be made into a standing if ness. You can also start trying to use the neck piece of the breastplate as secondary brakes by gently applying pressure along with using seat/hands etc during downwards transitions. So if see gets the idea you can tug gently on the neckstrap and she will steady ? Just a thought. If your unsure of the standing then dont use it but the beast showjumping in my sig is in one and the only thing restricting him is my hands!
soz for the essay. Ps how big is your girlie, always think she looks familiar...

I will go for a running first, and if that doesn't work then I will try a hunting breastplace with it.
I have never used one before except when I hacked her out in it. I would, if I really needed it, ask someone to help me fit it!
Just worried that she will start fighting it, realise she has restricted her and neck movement and go up with me...
She is 15hh, but I reckon she is a tad smaller hehe..
