a kind of magic

This year we are doing some major maintenance on our field. It is a typical meadow field, very wet in winter and as a result there are quite a few weeds.
We have mostly docks, nettles and thistles. Is it OK to spray for them now? The field is split into thirds so the bottom two thirds would be done first, then move the horses over when we can, and do the remaining third. It also needs a damn good harrow and roll.
The other thing is running across the field at intervals are 3 drainage ditches (where the fences now are-the fences are new-only a week old) which over the years have been trodden in and as a result are a lot shallower and also have bramble installations in them! Would re-digging the ditches to their original depth and removing said brambles help keep the field drier? I am not looking for a cure all but every little helps! Any other ideas are welcome, I just want to make it perfect!
