Hi all,
Me and my OH have been really enjoying this lovely weather and been extending the length and time of our hacks. Trying out new lovely bridle paths.
However I am always wondering how far we have gone in miles.
Suppose we can do some guessing with time and amount of work done etc. but just wondering if any of you have better ways of working out have far you have gone.
Many thanks for any help!

If you have a Smartphone you can download Woof Wear's Track my Hack app which measures your hack using gps.

Some of the people use the Map My Ride app on their phones, this gives you time, distance and average speed.

I think there are a few other similar apps too.

Either on a map using string to plot your route then measuring the length of the string, or the easier but more costly option is a GPS.
A GPS will also breakdown how fast you went on each part of your ride, and how hilly the route was.
You can pick up Garmin GPS watches for about £180 I think.

I've found endomondo quite accurate and my husband has too, he uses it when cycling and i have used it for riding and walking. We only have the basic free app.

OS map and a piece of string/paper, then measure it and work out using the scale of your map. You can't beat the old fashioned way!

I use the Stablemate app on my iPhone... it's really interesting to see how far you've gone and at what average speed!

I was out for an hour and a half today, mainly at walk due to hilly/stony terrain, with a couple of short bursts of trot and a couple of short canters... covered 5.08miles at an average speed of 3.27mph.

Sadly it's not always all that reliable... it sometimes tells me I've don'e thousands of miles, though it does seem to get the speed and length of time correct still.

If you haven't got a smartphone then this lets you plot your route on a map.

I found some apps worked better with different phones, Sportypal was good for older non android/iphone phones.

Mapmyride and Endomondo kept losing us in the woods. One time I ended up in Eastern Europe, another thought we had done 250 miles in 1 1/2 hours.

Currently using Runtastic which is proving to be very stable but does use alot of battery power.

I use endomondo too, and its great except I think the calories things is rather optimistic! I did a 1hr 45 mins hack mainly in walk and it said i'd burnt 800odd calories, I wish!

I do TREC so calculating speed is part of this! GPS etc not allowed so we measure the route on an Ordnance Survey map, then calculate total distance ie 4cm of route is 1km (assuming you use 1:25000 scale Explorer map with orange cover) so if you ride 48 cm = 12km approx 8mph.

I did this a while back for TREC and totally freaked the life out of myself by not realising my OS map was a Landranger not an Explorer

Now I use my GPS tracker to give me a flavour for steps vs ground coverage and speed and guess my way through / only use the string method if I really have to :D

I use a gps watch, bought it for training myself then realised i could use it for other things to  It is brilliant just give it a few seconds to find the satellites then press start and your off, then get home plug it into the computer and it shows on the map exactly where you have been, the speed the amount of hills you climbed up the the amount you went down, I've got quite fascinated by it all, Well worth the £100

I use a free app called Stable Mate to track mine - it tracks your route, tells you how far you've gone, how fast you've been going and shows a map of the route as well.
It also has functions for tracking things like worming, vaccinating and feet.
