Good morning all,

When measuring for bone I always understood that it should be measured just below the knee joint, however, I was at a friend's farm recently and she measured her horses bone about halfway down the cannon. I would have said halfway being midpoint between the knee and fetlock joints.

Just wondering if I have misunderstood how to do it properly.

Thank you.

Ok that's great thank you Eggs and Erinpaddywack. I always thought it was just below the knee just confused me when I saw it being measured so low down the leg, internet searches didn't bring me a conclusive answer either.

Just out of interest, does anyone know when bone stops growing, I have a fell yearling with really chunky legs. He has loads of good flat bone. He is in with three other young fells and he is chunky.

It is meant to be just below the knee but obviously if a horse had significant splints for example I can see it wouldn't be the most accurate place for that horse.

Thanks, the horse didn't appear to have any splints/ blemishes ( I'm nearly sure it hasn't) so it must just be her way of measuring bone. It would be interesting to see if measuring bone at different points gives different measurement readings.
