Probably a really numpty question, but if i use a tape measure to measure my youngster will i get an accurate reading? No one at our yard has a measuring stick and all my spare cash has gone on hay

You can get a pretty good measure. You need a flat area and a straight stick that can be placed horizontally across the withers to measure up to. If you stand the horse next to a wall you can place the stick across from the withers to the wall and get someone to mark the place. Then you can take your time and measure the height of the mark which makes it easier if you have a wriggly horse.

:D Thanks thats what i was thinking of doing. Not using the measure against my horse :) i don't think she'd stand still for me to do that, especially as a weigh tape is oh soooo scary

Get a plank of wood, or a jump pole, stand it upright level with withers, and use another piece of wood horizontally from withers. Get someone to double check both pieces are at right angles, then just mark the upright pole & measure after. A wall does work too, but with a youngster its easier not to have to line them up at a wall.
