Medium Light Turnout for a stupidly wide chest?!

Right... wondering if anyone can help. I'm after a rug that's a little heavier than a rainsheet (due to pone coming in cold), but not as thick as a medium. 50-150g? I'm aware that Fal, Swish, Shires, Mark Todd and maybe some others do the lighter rugs, but which ones are the best to go for in terms of fit with a very wide chest? I'm tempted by the Fal 40g, but how generous are they?

For reference, this is how wide we're talking (please excuse the grumpy face, he was wondering why I was faffing with pics rather than feeding him!). He's pretty much doubled in width over the past 12mths, he's 5 so I'm not convinced he's finished!!

Thoughts? His new style Rhino fits him great, the old style wug won't even do up around his chest!
 
Ive got a very thin amigo rug, but it is about 60 years old. My cob is a similar build to yours judging by the pic. Got a mark todd rug for £3 in desperation at a carboot and was astonished when it fastened (with room!!!) over my cobs chest! Its medium weight but couldnt tell u the make or model :\ all i know is that it saved me a fortune and fits my "dwarf shire horse" :)
 
My cob is probably about as wide too. The only turnout rugs I have so far found that fit well are Weatherbeeta Landas. They do a medium/lite which is 100g and you can get it in a combo or standard neck I believe.
 
My cob is a similar build and 15.1hh - he is currently in a 6ft9in Fal Chieftain which is VERY generous. I have no end of trouble finding rugs to fit around his chest, and I find buying a size up works for us. Fal seem the best fit, in fact he is wearing a fal domino in his stable tonight. Light enough for him not to get too warm and wide enough in the front to fit his neck/shoulders without pulling.

Your boy is a beaut - mine grew until he was eight so I think your right in saying he isn't done growing yet :).
 
Another vote for Shires - my current middleweight cob has a selection, and my previous very heavyweight gypsy cob also wore Shires rugs - both of them have had regular and combo styles.

Shires do a 100g rug that is lovely, now in both a regular and combo. I go up a size though - using a tape, he should have a 6'3, but the 6'6 actually fits him really well.

I don't think they do them in the very light weights of fill, but I've had a few Axiom rugs that have been great fits on cobs :)
 
My highland has CHEST EXPLODED this year. *rolls eyes*
He is in his fal cheiftan 40g at the minute.
6ft- which is his normal size- could do with a teeny size up but barely anything in it as it would then be too long for his short back.
Derbyhouse some are great- but total trial and error with them. argh...
But having bought a GFS Snug... Nothing I swear NOTHING can beat it!

The chest is excellent the rug is lovely and deep beautiful colour and fabulous price too. Could not fault it whatsoever fits my boy to perfection! It's in 110g.

This is the rug you want.!
 
My girl has a wide chest and I have Fal's or I use a Amigo rain sheet with a 100g horseware insulator underneath.

(Weatherbeeta, Rambo & Premier Equine look great, but above my budget!)

Are they all level pegging? I can run and pick up a Shires tomorrow, but would have to wait on the others to be delivered... another question: does 40g really keep them warm, or is it little more than a rainsheet? I don't want to wrap my fat cob up, but he did come in like a block of ice a couple of nights ago after being out in a no fill :(

Sorry for all the questions... rugs are giving me a headache!!

Can only comment on the fal, but yes mine is lovely and toasty in his, it isn't hugely cold here (-3c yesterday morning when he went out) but he is very happy in his. The fal is 1200 denier too, which I think helps keep him snug.

I too was concerned that 40g wouldn't be enough and have the neck cover that fits this rug bookmarked on my browser but it seems to suit mine.
 
The only rugs that fit my chunky boy is shires, swish or axiom.

Amigo aren't too bad but the ones above fit the best.

The worst fit are mark Todd, weatherbeeta, derby house .

Have never tried fal but have heard they are food on chunky horses but are too expensive for me.
 
That should be good not food lol.
Out of your list I would get the shires. All my shires rugs are best quality and excellent fit but if u are between sizes get the larger size
 
I have some Derby House and Weatherbeeta rugs that fit my wide boy. I have just purchased a Black Eclipse 1200 denier, 80g combo turnout off of ebay for £52. My boy had a discussion with the barbed wire fence which has resulted in a small tear in the rug, but for the money its a nice rug and a lovely fit.
 
Weatherbeeta or Premier definately. I have got a very broad Dales and they both are ok on him. Premier are definately worth the extra if you can save up a bit, or even try having a look at online auction sites as they do occasionally come up.
 
My mare had a wide chest and pointy shoulders. She was rubbed raw by her Weatherbeeta and a Shires. I got her a FAL and it fit her well, didn't rub, but the Rambos I saved up for were undoubtedly the best. She had Mark Todds too, but they fit the new, skinner TB one better than my Irish mare.

Out of the three on your shortlist I'd get the FAL.
 
Amigo xl. Specially for broad shoulder horses. Our Belgian draft doesn't go in anything but. New this winter and very happy with them. Amigo xl all the way
 
My BIG boy has shires rugs. He is 16hh and has a massive, massive chest and a neck too big for neck rugs! I'd love to get him ones from the Big Horse Shop but my budget won't stretch that far. :( The adjustable chest allows for me to do the top strap a bit looser to make it comfortable for him too. I think all Roman's rugs are the Highlander type ones. :)
 
Right, for reference, I ended up buying a Fal Bulldog, and a Shires Tempest (full neck). Why? Because they were on offer and I'm weak :o

Anyway, both fit (would've preferred the no neck Shires, but the full neck was cheaper :o ) but I'm more impressed with the Fal for him. Fits nice, very deep, doesn't pull anywhere and it's a rather nice colour!
