I have 4 to feed over winter, I TB and 3 ponies and last year I was using big bale haylage from my local farmer. They were the ~300kg square bales and although they were lasting up to 3 weeks in the cold weather I was still having to throw away a fair bit. I think I was also overfeeding in an effort to use it all up before it went off. I don't have a tractor so the farmer was delivering it two bales at a time and once it was delivered there was no way to move it.

This year I thought I would investigate trying to get some 'medium' sized bales, maybe around the 100kg mark. I figure that 100kg could be manhandled by two or three people if necessary. I had thought that round ones might be a good idea as they can be rolled.

Does anyone know of haylage suppliers who do this medium size of bale? I am in north Wiltshire so am looking for someone local to me who can deliver or a producer that offer nationwide delivery.

Thanks.

We used to just about manhandle the big bales. Back breaking though!

Last year we had the haylage made into 4' bales instead of 5', which made all the difference. One of those lasted us about 8 days for two large ISH, both good doers. It was almost hay quality, so lasted really well. (Talking about round bales here!)
