Hi,

My pony has the most AMAZING medium trot and he will do it when he is behind out hacking (loves to be in front) or out hunting/when he's very excited. Today I managed to get him to perform it and he did it beautifully (we were out hacking) I've never ridden a horse doing it before him and since he's so young he doesn't know the commands to do it he just does it when he feels like it ! I was wondering if anyone has any tips on how to get him to do it when I ask without confusing him (he normally goes into canter)

Thank you ! :)

i find that trot comes from being really straight, balanced and active, at the right moment.

on a hack look for somewhere nice and straight and ride over it first to check for potholes, then trot in a steady balanced way, sitting up nicely, when you feel the trot getting more powerful as he wants to go forwards, put your leg on girth and allow him to reach forwards and lengthen his stride, at the same time allow him to stretch his neck to match his longer stride, the whole pony will become very slightly longer, kinda reaching forwards

not much to do really, if he is in the right trot it will `just happen`

don`t fall into the trap of harsh aids or trying to hard, some days it will happen some days not, but eventually it will come when asked for.

that trot is the build up of balanced impulsion, released at the right moment which surges forwards covering more ground,, ideally the front and back legs moving in good diagonals.

it will strengthen him and open him to further schooling as long as its done in a steady rhythm and not too fast and choppy so he loses balance.
