Megazorb Bedding????

Hi all - have recently moved yards and now using shavings - have been using bedmax shavings but recently went to a shop where they sell megazorb bedding and they said that you use 8 - 10 bales to do initial start of stable and then only half a bag a week to top up?? is this realistic and also how good is it - does it really work and its doesnt look as comfy as shavings or is that it doesnt need to be?

I also have full rubber matting flooring down just as a comparison in case others dont many thanks.

I had a livery who used it.

It was ok - quite absorbant and looked like cat litter! However she did have to top up with 2 bags a week so wouldn't say it was that economical. The horse was quiet a wet one, but not a dirty one, if that makes sense!

I've used it and really liked it but, to get the most out of the it, you have to make a fairly deep bed. The poo is picked out everyday but the wet is left. DO NOT take the wet out. The wet goes to the bottom of the bed and is soaked up (it's very absorbent). Eventually, the base becomes solid although it doesn't smell and as long as you keep it well topped up with clean dry Megazorb, there is no problem. The first year I used it, I dug all the wet out after a month each time and started the bed again (I like a clean, white bed). This was a pointless exercise though and the second year I left the wet all winter - the only wet I took out was whatever had worked its way to the surface.

The problem will be if you have a horse that walks round or churns his/her bed up. This will disturb the base and give you a dirty bed. My girl is very wet but not a churner! So it worked really well.

Like you, I had a full rubber matted floor but you will still need to have a deep bed IMO to make it work properly. I used 1 bag per week and that kept my bed pristine.

This year I have used a base of Megazorb with Bedmax shaving on top - mainly because I think shavings make a nicer looking and more comfortable bed. This is working ok for me but I do have to take the wet shavings out each day as they smell when left. The Megazorb has now formed a solid base though and that won't be touched all winter.

I used to use it as it is good for wet horses. I changed to wood pellets as they work out far cheaper and to be honest, I find they do as good a job. If you have a horse that does not kick the poo into tiny bits, then megazorb is great, but our clydie is a big horse and kicks her droppings so the bed got dirty very quickly unless I took a lot out.

I used 2 and sometimes 3 bags a week, she was in 24 x 7 three days a week and out for 4 hours the other days so if you have more turn out, then you would not need as much.
