Poor T, she has really done a number on her tail today (she's in season, and it's hot and humid)

She often has a bit of a scritch in summer, and I use a combination of Derfin Clear and Derm14, but tonight the skin felt hot and inflamed, so I've covered what I could reach in sudocrem.

The thing is, she's made such a bald patch, I'm wondering if it would be easier to clip her whole dock (a la PRE) to make medicating it easier.

We're not proud! ;) We're not going anywhere and I can turn a blind eye to the bog brush while it grows in again.

Wwyd?

Mine sometimes gets an itchy tail and I wash it with shampoo that works very well. Can't remember the name, but it is well known commercial make, not from the vet - although I expect they would sell you something too.

Give it a good wash with a medicated shampoo then I put wonder gel on my horses tails twice a day and it does stop them rubbing, not sure if you can get it there its made by gold label, I don't use benzoate or strong products as one of mine is really sensitive to things on the skin.

I use human shampoo - herbal essences is good - but any will do (wouldn't necessarily suggest head and shoulders - think that is quite strong) . if it is kind enough for humans I suggest it is generally ok for horses - I wash my boy very regularly - keeping manes and tails clean really helps keep them itch free. I recommend kilitch and I am currently using aloe vera gel on a couple of patches he has rubbed on his face - they seem to be healing really well and regrowing new hair. main message is keep really clean

Give it a good wash with a medicated shampoo, and an even better rinse, and then get some Leovet no rub on there once each day or two. Works for mine, but he's a boy so the seasons thing isn't a factor. Obviously. Also has the benefit of being non-gunky. I have tried every potion on the market pretty much and gunky stuff that has a tendency to collect bits of field and bedding just seemed to make things more annoying for him. I didn't want to have to be washing it too frequently for fear of drying out the skin.

His tail looked like that the year before last when he started getting sweet itch. Repaired itself quickly enough not to draw the eye, so I wouldn't be inclined to do anything too dramatic by way of clipping.

I give my boy's tail a weekly wash in (human) anti-dandruff shampoo for sensitive skin - just a cheapo one - and then once completely dry, apply Camrosa ointment. The results in literally a couple of weeks were amazing, he's rubbed the hair off and even made it raw in places and it all grew back super-fast!
I should be on commission haha I didn't really believe the "before and after" photos they have on their website until I actually saw it happen with my own eyes. Can't stop recommending it to anyone who will listen now haha!
It forms a barrier from the midges and prevents them biting, and also promotes healing. I love the stuff, if it wasn't so pricey I'd be slapping it on everything on the yard!

I use head and shoulders itch relief shampoo on my super sensitive skinned super itchy mare and it has been fantastic. The sides of her dock are clipped (as she rubbed it too look like a toilet brush years ago) but I leave the top hair and I find she gets itchier when the hair grows back so I make sure I keep it neat and tidy at all times and the top washed regularly.

Agree with this ^^^ if my old boy gets itchy scratchy I wash with head and shoulders, then if he's rubbed a raw spot I use Camrosa too. Terrific stuff.

My mare could get an itchy tail like that. I used to wash it with an aloe vera shampoo and then use nettex itch stop, this worked well.
