Hi everyone, can melanomas develop above sarcoids? The reason I ask is my mare has a sarcoid on her side which up until now was unchanged however today I noticed that above the sarcoid there is a new bit popped out ( I’ll attach photo) now I have always felt that this was there but it sort of lay under the skin. I have been feeding sarc ex by global herbs so I’m not sure if that is what has made this other part appear or if it’s just a coincidence.
My concern is that this could be a melanoma, I know I will need to get the vet etc for confirmation but I was just wondering if melanomas can appear above sarcoids or if this looks like more of the sarcoid being pushed out?

Sarcoid tissue can actually be expansive compared to what we can see, so I would anticipate that this is just more of the same sarcoid becoming visible.
As to whether the sarcex is pushing it out, I would be sceptical as I would have thought it would come more pink but I may be wrong - I would continue and cross your fingers the supplement is doing something!

Thank you for that! I did sort of think this as I said I could always sort of feel that bit that has now came through.
I am also sceptical about the sarc ex tbh but we shall see, it would be brilliant if it did work tho!

If it doesn't there are threads on here with extensive suggestions to alternative treatments you could try :)

My friend’s gelding used to regularly get sarcoids. She swore by Sarcex and I do remember one suddenly getting bigger before it fell off one night in the bedding, never to return.
I know all horses are different and I’m sure sarcoids can react differently but it could be part of the healing process.

What does the vet say?

I am usually someone who very much err's on the side of 'get the vet and see what they think' but I'm not sure that most sarcoids warrant it - especially not flat, grey ones which aren't bleeding, infected or angry. I actually am not entirely sold that a lot of vet treatment (lazer, surgical removal, liverpool cream) doesn't aggravate sarcoids and prompt either further growth due to cells being left, or further growth elsewhere.

Whilst I agree with just keeping an eye on and not poking or annoying non troublesome sarcoids, Prof K’s company Equine Medical Solutions Ltd offers a sarcoid evaluation service via photos sent in by your vets.

It’s not spendy, and they have the experience to offer up to date diagnosis and advice. I’ve used it for a mare with various different types of sarcoids, the photo evaluation was c£70 a few years ago.

Thank you! I didn’t know about that. Will bring this up with my vet.

Incase anyone was interested, the nodule on this sarcoid ended up popping out mid January time leaving a rather deep hole! This has now healed up with normal skin no sarcoid!
The original larger part of the sacoid also fell off too although not quite as dramatic leaving a hole! There is a small piece left but tiny and seems to be getting smaller…
Spoke to the vet about it when she was out for vaccinations and agreed to laser this winter but is hoping with how it’s looking it will have self resolved.
I’m not sure if it was the sarc ex or if this was always going to happen, but none the less I am very impressed!

That's fantastic - what a great result!

Just curious = how old is your mare? And how long were you feeding Sarc-Ex for?

Just asking because my daughter's mare had a few small sarcoids as a youngster. We tried Sarc - Ex but didn't see any results. We did eventually get rid of them using aciclomir but she now may possibly have another( she's 8 now)

She is 8 this year, I got her when she was 6 and said sarcoid just looked to be a rub on her side but then developed! Been feeding it since October 24 but in December I also added in restore it’s by global herbs too and fast forward to now it’s almost gone!
Think every horse is different, I had tried radiance gold which people raved about but seen no change after months.

Agree. I had a sarcoid lazered. It came back within 6 months. And worse than before

My mares sarcoids were Liverpool cream or lasered, all went never came back. She went through melanoma treatment in Sept 2024 for a few inc this one.
