I was shocked today when my friend said she's amazed my 13 year old flea-bitten grey has no melanoma's, she said they usually have something by 7-8.

Anyone else have any experience re this, I've checked him over again tonight and can't find any lumps!

Thanks

Your friend hasn't known a lot of grey horses then. I have loads of them of all ages and only one has melanoma (around the rectum) and although there are half a dozen of them, they're very small and unlikely to cause a problem before old age catches up with her (she's 16 now.) My 18 year old grey stallion and a 17 year old grey gelding are both completely free of them, as is another 16 year old mare and a number of younger (8 - 12 year old) mares.

Normally, melanomas are not a major problem - although I would be concerned if a horse showed them by 7 or 8 as the risk of them becoming big enough to be a problem by the horse is mid-teens would be greater.

All the literature you read says that 85% of greys have melanomas by the age of 15, although I have only ever known 3 - mine is one of them unfortunately. He's one of 4 greys at the yard and is the youngest at 13.
