Melanomas

My old mare (33) has huge Melanomas one of them is leaking/weeping! this has happened in the past & they have dryed up & not been a problem, this however is a huge Melanoma, the vet is due at 2.30, was just wondering if any one has had this problem? they are under her dock & she has an oversized fly rug on which is keeping the fly's off and the air in. im hoping infection wont be a problem as every thing is weeping away?

Oh poor you, sounds nasty. Could they be surgically removed?

Could you tell me what they looked like when they first started. I think my grey has the start of 4 melanomas and am worried sick.

From the sounds of it you have done everything you could possibly do. I think these things can weep and I would advise keeping the area clean perhaps a bathe in salty water.

I hope your horse is ok.

I got Misfit on loan when she was 14, she had 3 or 4 smallish ones back then a few were sort of pea size the largest was about the size of a 50p they are under her dock so they are just black lumps. They stayed the same for year & years, then one leaked/wept and a few more came & the others started to grow, they are now huge the largest is the size of an orange! I keep them baby oiled that way they don't rub against each other & they stay soft & clean, last year she grew one on the bony bit were a brow band sits above, that looks just like a bump under the skin & is covered in hair.

They have never been a big problem, I wouldn't worry to much, I was recommended not to remove or interfere with them as some times this can cause more problems, The ones on the out side are ok, Its the ones on the inside you cant see that I worry about, the vet keeps saying as long as she can poo she's ok, even now she is fine in her self!

I know I have been lucky with Misfit but I would not worry to much about your horse just keep an eye on them & keep looking in its mouth a friends had a pony with them in her mouth so had to use a bit less bridle but again she went of for years it was Colic that got to her first!

ok down the page a bit in general theres another thread, have a look at tsome of the links, theres a huge amount of information about them

My old shetland had the same in that his melanomas were under his tail. They erupted about once every year or so. They were treated by the vet (but never removed!) and normally returned to normal after a week or two. Melanomas arn't nice and they were what ultimately led us to having Tricky pts but he was 33 when we did!
