would you buy a 17/18 year old pony with Melanomas on his willy for £600? bit of a long story so the short version is friend went to look at this cheap pony and likes it. was talking to my riding partner friend about it and turns out all the details and location match a pony she had on trial 18 mths ago. she spotted the melanomas and got vet to have a feel and vet advised her not to go on with the trial and purchase. I've told friend whos now thinking of buying him the full story and left it with her to think about and did say that I personally wouldn't touch him with a large stick. just interested to hear others opinions

has the pony not had any treatment for this? I spotted something on my sons pony and it turned out to be squamous cell carcenoma. He has had cryogenic surgical freezing and the tumours have dropped off, but i treated it early. He is doing great and has a new lease of life. The treatment cost me £650. I would think that if this pony has had no treatment that he must be in some discomfort.
Mine is 23 but thinks he is about 5.

My old mare had her first melanoma aged 7, she is now 33, they have never been a problem, they are now huge, My vet said he has only ever seen one horse with larger! they are still not a problem though. I wouldn't not have a horse just because of them. I would think carefully though. I know my old girl has been lucky with hers, I was advised not to have because of them, she was 14 then, but I have had her 19 wonderful years & she has been worth her weight in gold.

they can cause problems but in others they dont it might be worth you vet to have a look to see what he thinks before you buy!

Personally, no, I wouldn't having had an old mare put down many moons ago due to melanomas. It is not the ones that can be seen that normally cause the problems, it is the ones that can't!

my mare had visible ones around her dock, inner cheek and gullet and eventually had to be put down due to untreatable colic, internal ones were pressing and basically, nothing could be done. She was about 14-16 and was unknowingly riddled with them

Extremely sad and I wouldn't put myself up for that again, ever.

well i've told her the risks, advised her to talk to a vet but she's still going to buy him

she seems to have devolped the knack to tune out the bad stuff she doesn't want to hear and just hear the good stuff like he's safe on the roads
