This might sound like a wierd question but does anyone know if melanomas make horses itch?
My mare is grey, and I spend a lot of time checking her for lumps and bumps as I am paranoid about melanomas. She has what looks like a small melanoma on the side of her vulva.
She seems very itchy/ticklish from her flanks backwards, and when you brush her kicks at her belly and tail.
She doesn't do it in her stable or when being ridden.
There are a few flecks of mud around her thighs and belly which i have tried to get off - but she is extremely ticklish and hard to groom in this area. Her udders look normal and otherwise her vulva is normal.
It did occur to me that she might be in season, (although she has a marble she still comes in season sometimes) but she is normally very vocal and wees a lot when in season - there is a newly castrated youngster in the yard and she's not even paying that much attention to him.
Any ideas - this horse drives me crackers because she is so sensitive and ticklish, it is hard to tell if there is anything wrong with her or not!

Hmm...well ask youre vet to check for anything? if they cant find anything maybe shes just sensitive. try putting a plastic bag on a stick and rub it over her body (Esp. sensitive areas) hopefully after a little while she wont be as sensitive?? Good Luck x

Hello,

I used to have a Grey gelding and i am not sure whether this is the same as what you are mentioning but he had a melanoma on his sheath which meant that he produced alot of (i think its called smegma but not sure so don't laugh) :o this was black ended up on the inside of his thighs and all i had to do was use sheath cleanser to wash it at least twice a week.
he was also itchy under his belly and he kicked his leg up when i brushed him so i would say that they are itchy but by no means am i an expert.
The vet advised that because of where it was and that he was 25 at the time it grew that leaving it alone and cleaning was the best option.
I wouldn't worry too much - he lived to be 30! :)
