Apparently the last one will be in December and that is it.They aren't making any money any more and to be truthful, from what I've seen recently,I'm not surprised. Some of the poor things in the pens made me want to weep.:( I'll miss the tack sales though, there are always bargains to be had there.

When Melton closes, where is the next nearest to Leics? I've heard there is one at Newark, but never been.

Good Lord, what a slice of history going. In their hey day, they were THE sales to attend especially for the hunter dispersal sales, shame they've gone downhill since.

Agree, when I used to go, there were some super horses going through.

Newark was always a poor relation with respect to Melton. Whether the march of time has improved it or not, I don't know, as I'm no longer local to it.

Its about time people stopped breeding the unwanted, but thats anther story. I hope the sales closing will be a good thing ,making it even more uneconomic for local breeders/dealers/sellers/buyers/meatmen to sell and buy these wretched animals, then they should, hopefully, turn their trade into something other than horses.

I could wrong but I don't think Newark have held horse sales for years!

Derby would the next closest to leics if they still have sales.

Very sad if Melton horse sales is finishing for good. It is a real price of history gone.

Well,it was a friend who was at the cattle market on Tuesday [run by the same people] who told me.Apparently it is uneconomic for them to continue. But I'll do some digging and see if I can get it confirmed.

My first pony came from there, she was destined for the meat man,but bought by a charity an reschooled. We bought her after that. She was a lovely pony and went on to a pony club home after she left us.

I'll see what I can find out.

Gosh,I'd forgotten about this thread.Yes,the last sale was Dec.I know someone who wanted to take over doing the horse sales, but the market don't want to let it go to someone else and don't want to run it themselves.I don't know if it'll start up again if the economic situation improves.
