Hi All

Mum and I are planning on heading over to the sales at the weekend to look for a nice middleweight cob to bring on over the summer.

Before anyone panics that a bunch of novices are on a mission to 'save' a horse, We are both experienced have about 50 years experience between us and have had 5 sales horses between us in the past!!

However, neither of us has been out to the sales in over 10 years!! Just wondering if any of you good people can tell me what Melton is like nowadays? are decent projects still going through the sales or is it just the broken, lame, and mentally unstable ending up there now?!! also if anyone has been recently and can give an idea of the sorts of money exchanging hands that would be useful

Also anyone going who fancys a cuppa in the cafe - let me know :)

Hi,

I have been going to Melton for on & off for years, and although I have not been this year (went to the last sale before it closed for winter) there have been some half decent horses go through there.

It is a bit heart breaking of course, the usual lots of unhandled colts & fillys and old riding ponies, but, if you know your stuff (like you obviously do :) ) there have been some nice types go through for not much money.

The decent horses do sell for more for the rubbish, but there were a few half decent prospects last time I went that went for around £800-1.5k. There were also a few nicely bred youngsters that were there simply for pre winter stock reduction that went for peanuts!

Would say is definately worth a look, you could well find a nice project, & of course the chips in the pub are v nice too :D
 
Thanks ES - do you know if they still allow you to ride the horses? - I remember years ago, if the owner was willing and you got there early enough sometimes you could hop on for a couple of minutes - am guessing 'elf and safety wont allow that kind of crazy madness anymore?? :rolleyes::rolleyes::D:D
 
You can still ride.

You must wear a hat though and obviously best to make sure the seller rides them first. To be honest though there are usually only a small majority that seem bothered to tack them up and ride, They are usually the same faces, not that I have a problem with that as I used to work for a dealer. The horse is the same whoever you buy it from and as long as you are competant enough and realise they probs not gonna be a schoolmaster you can buy nice horses froma sale. One riders nightmare is anothers dream after all!!

Breakfast is always my first stop at Melton sale though!!
 
Oh yes, a good bit of trotting up & down still goes on :D but as bilboduke said most sellers don't bother tacking up the nags!

Have a look at the website too as they have changed the way they sell now, ie all entries taken on the day and possibly no catalouge, not sure if it affects buying tho!! :D
