Hi all - I have done my best to read through other posts re Melton and have gleaned some interesting info. My query is this - I am looking to get hold of a coloured cob to make 15.2hh+. I have seen a few at Melton and they seem to go for much less than you see on horsemart etc. It isnt really my area of expertise as I am an ex racer lover but my partner is ready for his 1st horse and this is what he wants. We went to the september sale and he fell in love with a 12yr old mare called Joss - was anyone there? she made 500 but was slightly back at the knee. I take the very interesting point that its worth going as much as poss to see what might be coiming back through and who the dealers are and im def planning to do that - will anyone be at the oct sale? Would you say Melton is as good a place as any to get a cob? I dont mind unbroken, but would prefer something older. also - what does it tend to be like in the winter months? i cant decide if it will be a full catalogue due to expense of keeping horses over winter or not much there because peeps dont want to buy at that time of yr.
also can anyone give me any pointers as to how to spot signs of doping - all i know is obvious - lethargy, penis hanging etc - anything else? also is there a vet there? can you get horse vetted and how do you know if you are at a warranteed or unwarranteed sale? it says in the sales notes on website that you can return horse if not as described in ring but i cant imagiune having much luck! any tips greatly appreciated!x

Hi there

There seemed to be some lovely young cobs at melton sales last weekend - and a very nice 4yr old skewbald who was as honest as the day is long:) came in the ring tacked up bless.

My advice is get there in good time - watch them coming off the wagon, try and find the seller and ask loads of questions. My friend sold her two cobs there a few weeks ago - both genunie and homebred but due to working all the hours god sends (due to her husband been made redundant) she was forced to part with her horses :(

Sad but someone got a real bargain - so I no there are some genuine horses, but be careful and if your buying from a dealer ask to see the passport (this will be in the auctioneers office) check the markings and make sure it matches the horse/horses ur considering buying etc.

Trading standards are present at most sales - and check every horse, but personally I would check aswell.

Good Luck and maybe see you there ;)October

I missed the September sale as was busy, but I'm normally there :)
As far as I know, everything sold is unwarranted, there is no vetting available and there is no catalogue - it's entry on the day.
Obvious signs of doping is droopy lower lip and that look in the eyes of blissful unawareness :D
There are plenty of nice ponies/horses going through the ring, the prices will be dropping at this time of year and by November will be rock bottom.
1 bit of advice though, or actually 2:
1. Don't buy anything outside the ring
2. If something goes through the ring second time, keep your hands in your pockets

thanks everyone - i had clicked subscribe to thread and hadnt received any notification that people had replied so sorry for my tardiness!
thanks for advice and am really interested in meeting up with anyione going who can show me the ropes a bit more!
we are def going in oct but just to watch again - we will take cash nov or dec. i noticed there were lots of gypsies there - whats the story there? i mean are they getting rid of rubbish or are they genuine (!) horses? just because i thought gypsy horses changed hands for a lot of money at appleby etc - i dont know much about it.

It's the Gypsy haunt, Melton is. Try to avoid the ones being sold by dealers, that normally means that they can't get rid privately ;)
The gypsy ones are only really a problem when sold outside the ring, means the seller a) doesn't want to pay a tenner to enter the horse and b) doesn't want to be traceable. Some genuine gypsy cobs do go through the ring, mainly youngstock, but really just buy what you see rather than read into the story :)

Hi there

Good luck and dont let the dealers run you (if you stand looking at the auctioneer you will notice a gaggle of dealer gypo dodgy sorts in the bottom right hand corner (they always stand inside the ring where the horses come in) if the auctioneers head is taking bids from that area chances are you are been run........they run there own stuff up or at least get people to do it for them! This is why you need to see the horses come off the lorry (or be there in good time) to see who they belong to :)

Good luck, wish I could help on the day but its doubtful I will have time.:o
