im teaching my boyfriend how to ride and wondering how is best to teach him rising trot? tried it this morning and had the usual beginner bouncing which must obviously hurt the boys!

just wondering is there a way of doing it to suit men?

Practise and lots of it - it might take several weeks, at once or twice a week before it suddenly 'clicks' and all of a sudden, he'll get it, like swimming or riding a bike.

First of all work on his position in walk, heels down, sitting tall but relaxed, keeping a contact, but not leaning on the reins etc, and making sure he knows what the aids are, etc. Then do some standing up and sitting back down in halt.

Then it's just a matter of lots of practise. You can put him on a lunge line, so all he has to think about is his own balance and not controling the horse, and call out the "up, down, up, down" which might help.

I sent my OH to a riding school to learn, because I couldn't bear to see him bouncing on my horses back!

Get him to start in light seat and then lower and up rather than starting sitting and trying to rise.

Also, make sure he is in briefs not boxers.

Other than that, laugh, mock and enjoy LOL !!!!!

Try to explain it as moving his weight onto his inner thighs rather than sitting and standing. That should stop him going so high with the inevitable painful result.

Other than that do as the others have suggested and laugh. Oh.. and tell him 'no pain, no gain' I'm sure he will thank you for it (not lol)

Im not speaking from experience here but just had a think about it, why not try using a balancing strap across the front of the saddle and when you pop him into trot, on the lunge, ask him to hover slightly and not rise whilst holding the strap with one hand. This way he can get used to the rhythm of the trot without being chucked in it and bouncing around. Hopefully when he's used to the movement he'll be able to sit gently and let the movement bounce him forward with minimal damage done to the crown jewels :)

What a timely post! Just back from giving my OH his first lesson- he rode as a child so was hoping he remembered something! Fine at a walk but couldn't get his rising in tempo- he wanted to know what he should do to perfect it and I was lost as to what to tell him except that it will click at some point! Next lesson will be on the lunge so he can have a neck strap and I don't need to worry about the poor horse's mouth!
OP- good Luke to your OH, hope he is enjoying learning to ride!

when i taught a older gentleman we decided that snug fitting briefs were the best to keep things out of danglings way cycling shorts also offer some padding, when walking teach him to stand in the stirrups and hold his weight there in balance using his thighs if that makes sense.
Balance strap is a sensible idea for both horse and rider.
I would think when he is strong enough to hold himself up of the back in walk, try the trot only a few strides at a time. When he has control then try the rising.
Funny isn't it. its so easy when you know how and you don't even have to think about it.
