Can menages be successfully built on concrete? Apparently it can be done but my first throught was drainage and then the fact that it may be quite high off the ground! So if anyone could tell me if it can make a nice menage or how difficult it is,
thanks!

I wouldnt liek tot think i was schooling a horse with a concrete base? Unless of course their was a lot of bedding down on top, but then would make it quite deep!
But then i dont build them so i wouldnt be sure? I have a firend who builds menages, he doesnt like using brick as a base as this restricts the drainage he prefers hardcore which is more absorbent

Yes it can. Although obviously you need a minimum depth and to choose your surface carefully. We were lucky that ours had proper drains already installed as it's in what was a cow barn.

Places like NEC don't go digging up their base before the HOYS or Olympia etc

PM if you like - we've just changed from woodchip to sand + foam (well ... will be foam when it comes

) and have gone through a hell of a lot of options before deciding on what to go for.

Yes you can, there are some great surfaces to use and concrete yards usually have the drains in place already, if not sufficient you can also use a draining membrane. It actually works out cheaper, because the most expensive part of building a school is what goes on underneath the surface, ie groundworks, drains and base.

Only ever experienced one at a livery yard, where it was REALLY deep to start with. When another livery owner tripped and broke her leg in it, they removed some of the sand, and in places it ended up being only centimeters thick, my pony slipped and landed on her knees in it with me on board. Grazed her knees, but no lasting damage. That was the last time I rode on it...it was a converted silage barn...i.e. sling in some sand and sling a gate on it. Plus I do believe that the NEC surface is only temporary, is maintained between classes and majorly overnight...so day to day use probably not a good idea unless you have a couple of hours free daily to manage it.
