Opinions wanted on menage surfaces. We already have a spar sand and rubber menage but are wanting to top this up again with more rubber but we are undecided whether to go for synthetic rubber strips or recycled tyre rubber which we have had before and rides extremely well but does need topping up every few years. We have been told the synthetic does not blow away does not sink into the sand any opinions or thoughts on this to help us decide which to go for.

I would never use rubber. Whilst im not a tree-hugging hippy, its leaches horrendous toxins into the water table and nearby waterways every time it rains. Furthermore, read up on new EU legislation concerning the disposal of rubber - it is impossible. To quote a well known wood chip surface manufacturer 'the horse industry is the laughing stock of the tyre industry' as they dispose of their used tyres on us in the form of arena surfaces, yet when our rubber surface has seen better days, we cannot dispose of it ourselves. The equestrian industry is basically at the end of the line. Also, one thing which I find really unpleasant, is riding on a rubber surface on a hot day. It stinks. there are far nicer surfaces available these days.
