There is a possibility that I may take my current share horse on full loan, and if I did this I would probably want to move her to a different yard. But my big problem is that I don't actually know of any suitable yard! So, any help would be very gratefully received

I am looking for a yard which offers assisted DIY/part livery (and full care when needed) and which has excellent hacking, ideally hacking access to Blackdown (Rowberrow Warren). It also needs to have all year turnout and a school with lights. Would ideally be on the north and/or east side of Blackdown. Burrington area would be ideal.

Any ideas? I already know of Blackdown in Shipham, but other than that I am a bit lost (fairly new to the area).

Many thanks, in advance

Thank you both for your quick replies! I have heard good things about Vale Hollow, but thought that the hacking might be limited to the farm itself? Quite a long way to Blackdown from there, and no other bridleways in the area as far as I can tell.

Do you think this is right? [Could easily be reading the map all wrong... has happened before!] I'm mainly a happy hacker so good hacking is v important to me.

Thanks again!

Hey, I've ridden out from vale hollow a couple of times as I've taken my girl up there (I live nearer to Bristol) to hack with my friend that works there, as long as your horse is ok in the roads you will be fine. The problem is you do have to hack along the main road for about 1/2mile and cars don't always slow, but once you are off that its great! As my friend says you need to do plenty of roadwork as a warm up anyway!! (looking on the bright side!!) I've heard they may try and get permission to ride accross neighbouring fields to cut this out my only hearsay. Its a lovley yard with good facilities I would give them a call and see what they say. Kate (who works there) will give you a tour on horseback, shes an endurance person so will go all day!

You can ride round the fields of the farm easily enough and there are lots of nice lanes around too. If you have an O/S map with you, you should be able to see Nine Barrows Lane not far away which leads onto a bridlepath and then you can get to Priddy Mineries and Stockhill.

From what I heard Spark's yard offers no turnout through winter.

There is a yard right on the edge of Rowberrow Warren and I'm trying to remember the name of it! I bought some rubber matting from there a couple of months back. Will go and do some research for you.

I know they have summer and winter turn out and flood lit school and fabulous hacking!

Brilliant - thank you all so much for your help! I will get in touch with Tabs at Vale Hollow and check it out.

Cluny - it would be wonderful if you could manage to remember the yard you've been to. Sounds fab!

Do they still do livery at Lyncombe lodge or Tynings? That gives easy access to Roeberrow and Blackdown. Failing that there is a bridleway from Winscombe that takes you round the quarry and you cross the main road into roeberrow warren so anywhere round there would be ok too.

Thanks Cluny!

LizzieJ - I think that Lyncombe lodge has closed now, if it's the place I'm thinking of - next to the ski slope in Churchill? I had completely forgotten about Tynings, and think they do do livery. Will give them a ring - thanks for reminding me!

Megan2006 - I've just been doing a bit of research on Priddy Mineries and Stockhill as I hadn't even heard of them before (thanks for expanding my local knowledge!). Is there permissive access for horses as far as you know? There are no bridleways marked on my OS map, and some of the stuff I came across via Google suggested that horses aren't welcome.

Thanks!
