Has anyone ever heard of this or had any experience of it? Survival rate etc?

Friend has just contacted me in a real state as her pup (10months) is currently in the vets on a drip, had a lumbar puncture and awaiting test resukts but vet thinks its meningitis.

Any spare vibes, please send them to little Scout, she is one severely ill puppy :(

Ooh the poor pup! I know a beagle who had meningitis at a similar age - was a very poorly thing for a while. This was a few years back but I think he was on steroids for a while and took a good few months to get well again

However, he DID make a full recovery and hasn't had a day's illness since to my knowledge, so fingers firmly crossed for Scout x

No advice, just hope she pulls through.
Is it as contagious as the human form is among youngsters?

I'm not sure CC, they do own another dog which is a bit odler but thankfully she is showing no signs. Vet said she has never seen anything like it. I haven't heard anything back from friend yet. I assume dog is currently in Jubilee as it is closest but I wonder would the likes of Cedar Grove or Earlswood have more experience? Although I suppose if they did Jubilee would refer the pup?

Hi, Yes I know about it 1st hand! My Irish Setter got it when she was 2. In her case it was an autoimmune reaction - they dont know what caused it, but probably huge spikes in her immune system - vaccinations and the fact she was due in season. She was at deaths door with no help from the neglegent (ssp?) vet who was usuless. Eventually we got a second opinion and after stabalising her through the night she was referred to Dick Whites at Newmarket in the fabulous hands of Giunio Cherubini. She underwent an MRI scan, a lumbah puncture and was then put on huge doses of steroids and chemo. She was a mess. After about 3 months we had to take her off the steroids as they were making her skin so thin it ulcerated - she had no paw pads. She went back in and was put on Atopica (very expensive but saved her feet!). After 2.5 years she came off the chemo - injections every 3 weeks (this March) and X everything is back to her wonderful mad self. Apart from cheating death a second time with bloat and a twisted gut, shes great - luck of the Irish:) The specialist said he sees a case a week, some more serious than others. Twiggy had the worse type (typical). It can effect any breed and sex, but is usually seen in younger dogs around the 2 year mark. Here is a link to Dick Whites they have some good info

My heart is absolutely with your friend and her pup, I have tears in my eyes writing this. We went through hell with Twig, thankfully a very happy ending, if not a skint one - and yes we were insured:) I have everything crossed for pup, its heartbreaking to see. XXXX

Oh gosh smiffyimp, what a lot your dog has been through! So glad to hear she is better and I shall e-mail the link to my friend, thank you :) I haven't heard from her yet today so fingers crossed no news is good news.
