Mens Autumn Hunting Attire

I'm going out hunting for the 1st time next week (Autumn) and looking for a bit of clarity on a couple of bits.

1 - If i wear a shirt and tie under my tweed jacket what colour should the shirt and tie be? e.g is a white shirt a bit of a no no (read it some where that it is incorrect) and a patterned (subtle) tie be ok?
or should I really wear a coloured/patterned stock with a hunt shirt

2- do you take flasks to autumn hunts or is this after the opening meet

3 - Is a martingale acceptable rather than a hunting breast plate (I like the neckstrap) - again i read somewhere this is also incorrect

4 - my long riding boots are black field boots are these ok? , yep you guessed it. I read that fieldboots are also incorrect too

I've had a search all over the net and still struggling to find a definitive (if there is such a thing) answer to the questions as so much of it is contradictory and obviously don't want to start off on the wrong foot.

Hi Craig!

I'm not sure if a white shirt is incorrect, but I know a lot of people wear blue or canary shirts and a tie that goes with that and their tweed. A coloured stock and stock shirt is equally acceptable.

generally flasks are left at home until the opening meet - 7am is far too early for booze!

A martingale is perfectly acceptable, as is a stirrup leather as a neck strap, as is any sort of breastplate!

and field boots are fine!

I was always told that with ratcatcher (tweed) it should be shirt and tie before the opening meet, coloured stock after Cheltenham. But these days you see either at both times. Enjoy

ETA: I don't recall any such advice being given to me regarding shirt colour, I wear a white shirt....

Oh dear! We have been probably wrong for years!

OH wears tatt check shirt with hunt tie and I usually wear a coloured stock - both with keepers tweed.

Try getting hold of a copy of this book - lots of useful hints for what shirt and tie goes with what jacket! It is a bit girly but there are hints for the chaps too. There is even a whole table for what colours of tweed look good on different colours of neds!!!

OP, what you are proposing sounds fine Don't worry too much about it, as long as you any horse are clean and tidy nobody will mind/notice what colour your shirt is. Generally no flasks until opening meet although last year when it was very hot in september a few of us took flasks with water in

We take our flasks well before the opening meet!! May be not for the first couple of weeks, but then we do. Maybe we are just all alkies!!
