Having not bought any in too long I just wondered if anyone had any recommendations of what to invest in and what to avoid?? I realise most of the forum will be ladies.............am more than thankful for any help!

Much appreciated

I have had several zips fail on Mark Todd breeches. Not something you want to happen too often! Also they're quite thin and non-stretchy. As a bloke the best breeches I've found so far are Shires: Men's Rochester Performance Breeches. Really good value too. They're the right thickness, right amount of stretchiness, come in traditional show colours but also brown for everyday use. Plus they seem well made. I have worn mine nearly everyday for the last 6 months and they're still going strong.

I am having the same problem, looking at different ones just now. Shires seems like the best option though as they wont break the bank if they need replaced.

Is the sizing usually just the same as you would be for jeans etc? I was thinking of ordering a size bigger as I'm not keen on the idea of them being a bit like leggings and showing everything :) But also don't want them to be baggy! Decisions decisions...

Yeah the sizing is the same. The Shires Rochester ones aren't baggy. I don't think breeches look like leggings anyway, because they're thicker, have pockets and you wear them with long boots etc. Personally I hate baggy or pleated breeches because I think they look a bit poncey and old-fashioned. I prefer something that looks like modern sportswear. Plus I like a bit of support around the nads. I am really happy with the performance of the Shires Rochester Performance Breeches too (which is the main thing). As for modesty, with all the MAMIL strutting about do we really have to worry about how tight our breeches are! At least we don't wear lycra. You'll hear the odd woman bemoaning men in tight breeches, but stuff 'em (not the breeches that would be wrong). Wear what you want if it's practical. Men's liberation!

Yeah you've definitley got a point about MAMIL lol. The support is mostly why I'm going to get some. Mostly ride in jeans just now but they don't really keep you where you're supposed to be if you know what I mean!

Yeah. Breeches definitely more comfortable than jeans, and it's nice to be comfy. Also, the 2 worst falls I've had were when I was wearing jeans. I'm not sure there's a link there, but now I associate jeans with the dark side!

Thanks for the recommendation of the shires breeches Soapy. Will look at them for the husband, he likes non-pleated jodhs rather than pleated breeches and as a keen cyclist is not remotely concerned about tightness! He is still wearing some ancient saddle master ones as he can't find any new ones he likes.

No problemo. I hope they're suitable. It is quite hard to find breeches with the right combo of features. Several pairs I bought on the Internet aren't even that stretchy - and surely the point of breeches is that they're stretchy isn't it? I am convinced that a fall I had recently, whilst wearing jeans, wouldn't have happened if I'd can the extra flexibility that stretchy breeches offer. I was half off left side of horse and desperately trying to grapple my right leg back round t'other side (to pull myself upright) but my denim jeans reached the point of no return and off I plopped - watching my horses bum as he disappeared, bucking and farting, into the distance (as per usual).☺
