Merlin's new game

Tuesday, i thought i'd let him off for it because i was carrying scary foil crisp packets to add to their 'scary jump wing'

(jump wing i attach things too i think they might find scary, hoping that they will eventually become less spooky when grown up

)

But when i went to put his headcollar on, i put it over his nose and when i went to do the other bit up he ran backwards

He did this twice, before the third time i managed to get hold of the other strap and hang on while he jumped about a bit before realising he was captured

Last night, he did the same thing, only twice this time though.

So i put him out in a head collar and thought that when i go to catch him tonight i will try putting a head collar on over the top of the one he is wearing, then if he tries to run backwards i have the one he is already wearing to grab?
Make sense?

Not sure why he has suddenly started doing it though? Guess he thinks its a game he is only 2yo?

He always wants to come in, i call him and he comes straight over to me every time? Just suddenly not wanting headcollar on?!

Not sure what to suggest :-( but do be careful re: getting your fingers trapped in buckles etc & wear gloves. As he still wants to come in & is coming to call sounds like you should be able to get over this!

snds like he has just fnd a new game am sure he will stop doin it i a couple ofweeks but agree watch you dont get ur fingers stuck in a buckle when hes tryin 2 run away

I would put the strap over the top first (behind his ears) - I'm trying to think how to explain it now, as I do this to stop them from taking their noses out of the headcollar, but can't think how to explain it!

- approach horse
- put strap behind ears and lead rope over neck
- with one hand, hold onto strap over ears, on the same side that you are standing, whilst putting horses nose into noseband - this usually works out so that if they try to escape you can keep hold of them, but I've probably not explained it very well!

OP, you could try catching him with the headpiece done up and the clip under his cheekbone undone (see jumpthemoon's siggie for example if this type of headcollar, not all have the clip), that way it is a quicker job to get the nose in and them caught by the headpiece being over their ears, then do the clip up knowing that he can't escape it in the meantime

I agree he is prob just trying it on and you sound like you are doing the right thing anyway

Well, left the headcollar on him for 2 days, and when i went to catch him i put another headcollar over the top.

He was fine, so i took it off again and he's been ok last couple of days too!

Strange baby!!
