Someone I know well is a "foster mum" to rescue dogs. Most of these dogs arrive at the rescue centre (from whom she "fosters") in shipments from Ireland where strays are put down very quickly rather than re-homed. I was extremely upset to hear that my friend had recently learnt that all strays remaining at the pound in Ireland at 1pm on the 23rd December will be put down as there is no-one to man the pound over Christmas. After Christmas, they will open their doors again for new strays. Having met some of the lovely pups and young dogs she has fostered and re-homed, I find it absolutely heart-breaking that so many dogs will be robbed of a chance to live a happy life in new, loving homes........or am I just too soft and unrealistic????

God how awful, I know this goes on but doesn't make it any easier to hear (just like the tb post in NL), especially as there is nothing anyone can do about it, the numbers are just too large. Perhaps you should have to have a licence to breed dogs, there would less indiscriminate breeding. If there are 20 people on this board who all breed a litter each this year (average 8 pups litter), thats 160 puppies, if they do that every year for five years, thats 800 puppies... now imagine that across the whole country... each person thinks they're only producing 8 puppies a year but added all together it's a huge enourmous number. I'm not saying peope here breed indiscriminatly and I know there are some excellent reputable breeders here but for the people who "would like to breed my dog" this is what happens.

It really is so sad, my brother now lives in NI and wanted a dog, he came back from the pound with a beautiful young black lab, a few weeks later he rehomed another lab just as nice again from the pound. There is far too much indicriminate breeding, the wastage is heartbreaking
