My gelding recently lost his left fore shoe (a couple days ago)...hes not in work due to rss on the same fetlock so i didnt think anything of it. then i go down there yesterday and hes practically got half a hoof left! Its all cracked and split with a giant chunk missing and it flaking all over the place..its never happened before?...i booked the farrier immediately but im dreading what he'll need to do...???

Is there any bleeding?

I'm no trimmer or farrier and this happened to one of my horses when I first got him and had his shoes removed. In his case has was breaking off all the overgrown and weak hoof wall. I wouldn't panic too much if there's no bleeding or discomfort. :)
I had a major panic at the time btw.

Yeah? no there's no bleeding it hasnt gone through to flesh or anything, he's just got a considerably smaller crappy-looking hoof now :( i did go majorly loopy when i saw it...i rather scared my uncle who was with me at the time...!

You could try some vet wrap or ducttape to try and protect it a bit but there's not really much you can do, maybe get a hoof boot incase it happens again in the future.

I'd get him in and keep him there if you can. You really don't want him hooning around and doing more damage. As others have said, protect it by wrapping etc and try and keep your cool.

What do you mean "the whole front of his hoof is gone"?

Is he unsound? If not, you are worrying about nothing and his feet are supposed to be that short. Unshod feet are usually scarily short to someone who is used to seeing horses only in shoes.

If he is unsound, protect it and stop him breaking any more of it, and don't panic, it will regrow.

He's not completley sound but that is due to a prob that came up before with his fetlock. The farrier came and took all his shoes off, hes had to go away and make a teeny shoe to fit his flid-hoof now!
