How effective is one against the other? Horse is currently on Danilon and the vet would like him to go on metacam short term. Would you expect to see an improvement in lameness on Metacam over danilon? I know Metacam is much more expensive but if it helps its got to be worth it.

Hi i dont know what use this will be to you but seeing as nobody has replied yet iwill tell you my tale and hope it helps. My vet suggested it at one point for my horse but have never tried it.But my dog was on it for spondulitus. It was very palatable for her she had dicky tummy and very fusy eater .She lived till 17and half and would fly round.Use to take it out of syringe bless her.If only short term give it a go.I know it was a dog but i liked it for her.Hope you get more replies.

My horse was on danilon for about 18months before he had an allergic reaction to it, at the time i thought the horse was doing well on danilon. he had a break from any drugs while the side effects subsided, after which i was adviced to try metacam as an alternative. 6months down the line i can say i have seen an improvement, i believe there aren't as many side effects as using danilon/bute and i personally believe he is more mobile from using the metacam i have heard more stories of him hooning around the field and he will now be coming back into work this summer which i never thought 2 years ago would be possible after being told his arthritis was so severve. Ok its only light hacking in walk with tiny amounts of trot but i never thought we'd even manage walk again (however it could just be down to better management, joint supplements etc) unfortunately i cant go back to danilon or bute due to his reaction to see if it is the metacam but my vet recommends metacam over danilon (in her opinion) so personally yes i would expect to see some improvement using metacam or danilon. theres lot of articles online about it if you fancy reading up :) hope you see some improvement if you decide to try.

Previcox/Equicox is supposed to have much reduced side effects compared to bute/danilon and metacam. Its used for treating arthritis in dogs and now in horses. I've just had some from vet to try my horse on as she can't have bute and now can't have metacam. I'm not sure how effective it will be as a pain killer on her mouth but having googled it, it seems very good for lameness problems. Not sure how much it costs as haven't had bill yet but was told it was similar price to metacam, the box i have has thirty tablets in and my horse is to only have half a tablet a day.

coloured c0b what sort of allergic reaction did your horse have to danilon? I think mine is having some sort of allergic type reaction at the moment to karidox and now metacam.

Silverfire do you know how safe the Previcox/Equicox is for horses prone to ulcers? I was told Metacam would be ok, but it turns out that for him it wasn't & he had terrible problems as a result, to the extent that we came very close to losing him :(

I know a few horses doing really well on previcox, I'm quite impressed with the results. However, our vets prescribe just a quarter of a tablet daily. The horses are approximately 540 kg +
This makes it quite a cheap option.
Unfortunately it didn't work for my mare with a ligament injury, but for the horses with arthritis that I know, it does.

silverfire it was quite a severe reaction his head swelled up so much so i couldn't even put a head collar on him. He was very ill and we thought we was going to lose him. he ended up with very low blood counts, with his sheeth and belly containing massive amounts of fluid. He had a week on box rest and pretty much made a full recovery. we wasn't sure it was danilon but tried him again just before this winter and his sheath become fluid filled - danilon stopped and all was fine again.

I've been told previcox is the safest to use for horses with any gut problems. My horse (who does have gut problems) is being scoped tomorrow to see if she has ulcers which may have been caused by metacam, she is very poorly at the moment after having a dose of metacam twelve days ago and hasn't been right since having a month of metacam a few weeks ago which did follow two weeks of karidox which she seems to have developed an allergy to. Could i ask what happened with your horse please? What problems did he have? PM me if you would rather.

Poor boy glad he recovered okay from it.

For anyone interested my horse was scoped this morning and her stomach is full of ulcers, she also has ulcers in her pylorus and as far as the scope went beyond there, there were ulcers... They look really bad and its no wonder she doesn't want to eat much at the moment. Blood test week last Tuesday was normal. She had 4 weeks oral metacam Oct/Nov and 4 weeks Dec/Jan and one dose 13 days ago and hasn't been right since that last dose.

Thank you, I have gone ahead with the metacam as if we can't control his pain he wont be around much longer :( Silverfire I hope your horse has a speedy recovery and is more comfortable soon

Silverfire I've PM'd you x

ETA forgot to mention that the vet thought that we were dealing with gastric & pyloric ulcers. He'd not had the latter before.
