Milli been on metacam for like 2 years on and off... shes now on it permanently (20ml once a day as of october) - shes doing really well on it and as happy as larry! :)

however someone told me that I should be getting her blood tested every 6 months?? Due to issues with their dog (metacam related)

how true is this?

If its the case 6 months of "regular use", she will need a blood test march - april time....?

Thanks in advance :)

oh n if she does need one - what is the average cost??

I hope you don't mean 20ml! I think you mean for 20kg weight. Metacam can cause kidney issues if used long term. My arthritic collie is on it and has been for a long time. They tested her kidney function before she started it and it was normal and so once a year they check it just to make sure it's not compromised. To be honest, she'll probably die long before it ever caused any serious kidney issues. I think you only really have to worry if they have exisiting problems which the Metacam may make worse. x

Someone on another forum posted recently about their dog dying due to organ failure caused by metacam.

i know. My friends dog died from the same.... due to not being told to have their dog tested every 6 months....which *their* vet didnt say

Im happy to change what shes on but shes doing really well on it..

I am hoping that i can ease her off it when spring comes but then again HD isnt going to go away! (its mild)! but she does waddle/hop and a small limp

ilovefoals- the 20 on the syringe. sorry

My dog has been on it for about 3 years due to arthritis. He is nearly 12 years old - a collie x. I am fully aware of the risks of metacam, but I would prefer him to have a shorter life without pain than a longer one limping round. He is happy and as long as he is happy we won't be changing anything.

tbh this is at the back of my mind. As long as my dogs happy and pain free its only me that has to feel the pain of loosing her.

My dog whos on metacam is 5......(just)

shes been on and off it for 2 years.

My previous collie was 13 when he died from a tumour. He had metacam for a few years beforehand too.

I feel the same as you Holly Hocks. Re the 20mls noodle, my hubby says the same. I nearly died when he told me he'd given her her 20mls of Metacam. Think that might have finished her off! :)

i rung the vets.....

i figured as my insurance is up for renewal in jan (sticking with the same company) it would b increibly stupid not to at least ask about her blood test now as she would be covered...

vets told me they dont normally do blood tests when on metacam (wtf?!) not what ive been told by someone who lost their dog to organ failure.

Anyhow her consultation is booked for weds... bloods will be taken then and there if needed, either way i will pay for them - insurance or not.

AM i going overboard or am i right?

I did also explain to the receptionist she drinks a hell of a lot of water (which shes done for months!)

other than that shes ok!

I think you're right. Better to be safe than sorry. I'm surprised they don't routinely do it. It was one of the first things my vet mentioned when we discussed molly being on it long term.
